  2. INL Background • Established in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station • Government Owned – Contractor Operated • Covers 890 square miles and employs approximately 3500 personnel • 52 reactors built and operated since inception; 2 currently operating with an additional reactor being evaluated for restart • Irradiation – Post Irradiation Examination • Select Current Projects • NGNP • Fuel Cycle R&D • Nuclear Nonproliferation • Light Water Reactor Sustainability • ATR National Scientific User Facility

  3. Introduction • It is clear that laboratory performance has not met expectations: • We have not been effective at identifying issues – they find us. • We operate in a reactive, crisis management mode in responding to events. • Two pronged approach to address the current performance issues: • Establish, in collaboration with line management, standards, expectations and associated behaviors that promote performance improvement as a core business function. • Provide a set of tools which enables employees to simply identify issues, allows effective disposition of those issues, and efficient data retrieval to effectively trend and monitor laboratory performance.

  4. Specific Challenges To Continuous Improvement • Current capabilities to monitor performance and manage issues at the laboratory level is a barrier to continuous improvement • Employee engagement is lacking because of the complexity of the current tools which are not user friendly and don’t effectively enable data analysis • Current issues management process flow does not support low threshold reporting. • Multiple business lines require a graded approach to risk management • Underlying Issues with current architecture for issue identification and analysis include • Data entry process is difficult, intimidating and cumbersome • Current tools lack capabilities to effectively pull and generate value-added data • Data generation is time consuming and labor intensive • Management and staff time focused on gathering data and not analytics/decisions • Our expectations and behaviors don’t fully embrace continuous improvement through identification of issues/concerns partly because its too hard

  5. What is LabWay? • LabWay is our new, user-friendly, enterprise applications platform • LabWay has applications that will replace ICAMS, the NCR program, Request for Services with a single point entry in the initial release • LabWay incorporates several generic tools that can be utilized to aid in managing routine tasks and place data at our fingertips

  6. What are the benefits to the Lab? • One size does not fit all • Standardized reporting of Lab-wide metrics • Cloud and mobile ready • Knowledge Capture • Not Expert based • Continuous Improvement through large user network • Flexibility to change workflows to reflect how things are done • Managed Service fits vision for IM • Flexible to scale up or down with the business • Vendor resource partnership

  7. What are the benefits to the employees? • Single point entry • Extremely intuitive to use, like using your home applications • Powerful search capabilities including attachments • Very quick entry of initial data • Easy access to feedback and following items of interest • Flexibility in notifications • Personalized dash board keeps work and routine items in an organized arrangement • Designed to serve a diverse demographic

  8. Expected Outcomes – Improved Laboratory Intelligence Good Data + Good Analysis = Good Decisions Good Data Ease of use promotes employee engagement in the continuous improvement process Intuitive interface for data entry Designed on the front end to capture data that matters. Effective business workflow. Good Analysis Builds on the Laboratory Intelligence Initiative. Allows all users easy access to data that is important to them – customizable. Promotes predictive analysis based upon data from many sources. Provides consistency in structure and format of analysis. Good Decisions Performance Excellence enable through continuous improvement Mission is accomplished efficiently and effectively

  9. Ease of use • Personalized start page • Intuitive search and reporting • Clear instructions and help options • Automatic task routing and lists • Visual workflow diagrams • One-click PDF view and history
