  2. Use an apostrophe to show a contraction or to show ownership or possession. The apostrophe always communicates possession or contraction. Possessives = Ownership Contractions = Squished Words

  3. Its vs. It’s Can you replace the itwith it is? If so, then use it’s. “It’s raining hard outside.” If itis showing possession, then use its. “The dog chewed its bone.”

  4. Who’s vs. Whose Can you replace the whowith who is? If so, then use who’s. “Who’s coming over tonight?” If whois showing possession, then use whose. “Whose shoes are those?”

  5. Contraction: “The cat’s out of the bag.” Possessive: “The cat’s feet are out of the bag.” WRONG: “All the cat’s are out of the bag.” DO NOT USE APOSTROPHES TO MAKE A NOUN PLURAL!
