  2. Who Am I? Bartolomeu Dias was born in 1451 in Algarve and died May 29, 1500 at the Cape of Good Hope. He was Portuguese and was known for being the first person to sail around the southern most tip of Africa

  3. Why Go? King John II of Portugal appointed Dias to sail along the coast of Africa in hopes to find a trade route to India. They sailed along the west coast of Africa not straying too far so they didn't know where they were. Along the way Dias found and named many places including Aguada De Sao Bras. He finally got to the furthest point in March near Bushman's River. Dias wanted to continue sailing to India, But didn't have the resources to, so they went home with the news that there was a route to India.

  4. Route to Africa He chose to take this route because it was the only way they could go without going through other land that is already owned. Especially by Spain because they were in a war. They had a 1460 map from Venice that showed the Indian Ocean on their side of Africa.

  5. Finance King John II gave Dias a supplied ship, gold and silver. He took six Africans with him. He dropped them off at various stops along Africa. The last stop, two africans guarded the ship as he explored.

  6. Why was this exploration important? This exploration was important because he found a route to India. Trading with India will make Portugal a powerful country. This will lead to Christopher Columbus finding America.
