  2. Today, you will take notes using a foldable: • Fold your paper “hot dog” style and leave about ¾ inch for a title strip. • Fold it in half the other way and half again so that you have 4 sections. FOLDABLE TITLE

  3. TITLE: Measurements • Cut 3 times so you have 4 flaps. • Label each flap: mass, volume, length, & temperature mass volume length temperature Measurements

  5. …BUT FIRST: Background on SI Units • Scientists use the metric system which is the international system (SI) of measurement. • France was the 1st country to adopt the metric system in 1795.

  6. Standardization • SI units were designed to provide a worldwide standard of physical measurement for science, industry, and commerce. • SI was adopted worldwide in 1960.

  8. MASS 1. Definition: * Mass is the amount of matter in an object. 2. Base Unit: * for mass = gram (g); larger masses = kilogram (kg); smaller masses = milligram (mg)

  9. MASS 3. Instrument: * Mass is measured using a Triple Beam Balance

  10. REMINDER about MASS • The weight of an object can change but the mass remains the same. • Weight is a measurement of force, and will change depending on gravity.

  11. VOLUME • 1. Definition: • * Volume is the amount of space an object takes up • 2. Base Unit: • a) for liquid volume = liter (L) • b) for solid volume = cubic meter(m3)

  12. LIQUID VOLUME 3. Instrument: * LiquidVolume is measured using a beaker, graduated cylinder, or a flask Beaker Erlinmeyer Flask Graduated Cylinder Volumetric Flask

  13. SOLID VOLUME 3. Instrument: * Solid volumeis calculated measuring the sides with a metric ruler and then using the formula: L x W x H = V 3cm x 2cm x 4cm = 24cm3

  14. LENGTH 1. Definition: * Length is a measure of distance 2. Base Unit: * for length = meter (m); longer lengths = kilometers (km); shorter lengths = centimeters (cm) 3. Instrument: * Length is measured using a metric ruler; for very large distances, we use the light year

  15. TEMPERATURE 1. Definition: * Temperature is the measurement of the amount of heat in an object 2. Base Unit: * for temperature = Celsius (⁰C); very hot or very cold temperatures are measured in degrees Kelvin (K) 3. Instrument: * Temperature is measured using a thermometer
