  1. Integrated Instructional Materials for Technological Literacy North Carolina Department of Public Instruction NC STATE UNIVERSITY

  2. Background Science, Mathematics, and Technology (SMT) literacy is vital to maintaining the economic health of the nation and the well-being of its citizenry. Given the complexity of our society today, all students need to graduate from high school with adequate literacy in science, mathematics, and technology.

  3. The TECH-know project serves as the basis for much needed instructional materials that are correlated with the: • Standards for Technological Literacy • National Science Education Standards • Principles and Standards for School Mathematics

  4. Technology Student Association The TECH-know instructional materials are based on twenty competitive events issued by the Technology Student Association (TSA). The mission of TSA is to prepare students for the challenges of a dynamic world by promoting technological literacy, leadership, and problem solving. TSA annually prepares competitive event information that challenge more than 100,000 students in forty-five states.

  5. The Standards The International Technology Education Association in conjunction with the Technology for All Americans Project has prepared a set of technology standards in their publication Standards for Technological Literacy. These standards represent an essential core of technological knowledge and skills that students in grades K-12 should acquire. The TECH-know instructional materials will map to these standards, and facilitate the implementation of the standards.

  6. Science, Mathematics, and Technology The TECH-know project will identify the fundamental science, mathematics, and technological concepts and theories that are essential for solving selected TSA problems. ExplorNet is identifying practicing engineering and business professionals to accomplish this task.

  7. Goals Goal 1 Create and develop high quality, co-curricular instructional material to support activities that will implement the Standards for Technological Literacy. Goal 2 Work with TSA, state departments of education , corporations, and TED associations to align , develop, and evaluate activities in keeping with science, mathematics, and technology standards. Goal 3 Positively impact student learning and success. Goal 4 Produce, field test, and distribute instructional materials nationally.
