  6. Why the E-course was developed • One of the most important jobs of microbicide researchers & advocates is to provide informative and accurate answers to questions from community members, trial participants, journalists, policymakers and others from around the world.

  7. Goal of the E-course • The Microbicide Essentials course is designed to build the capacity of clinical trial staff, advocates, policymakers, and other stakeholders to be able to speak knowledgeably and answer questions regarding the complexities of microbicides development. • It aims to go beyond the basics to give in-depth information on the: • Basic science of HIV and microbicides • Need for microbicides and expected use • Preclinical research and clinical trials • Issues related to access

Course Modules • Module 1: Introduction to Microbicides • Module 2: Basic Science • Module 3: How Would Microbicides Work? • Module 4: Need, Use, and Impact • Module 5: Development and Clinical Trials • Module 6: Making Access a Reality • Module 7: The Microbicides Landscape • Rectal Microbicides

  10. Module Pretests, Quizzes & Tests Each module begins with a pretest and ends with a “module test” You must successfully pass each module test to complete the course.

  14. Module Summaries Each module also ends with a vignette presenting typical questions that you may encounter in your work. You are presented with a choice of answers to each question. How you might answer the question is then demonstrated.

Certificate of Completion & Continuing Education Credit • All users receive a certificate of course completion after the final test • U.S. nurses, nurse midwives, physician assistants, and physicians are able to receive continuing-education credits through ARHP and ACCME • GCM is in conversations with South African and Ugandan universities to establish a continuing education system for Africa-based providers
