  1. Fertilization

  2. Human life begins with the union of one cell from the male called a sperm and one cell from the female called an egg or ovum. When the sperm and ovum unite, it is called fertilization or conception.

  3. Ovulation During ovulation, the ovum leaves the ovary

  4. Conception Sperm cells enter the vagina by means of sexual intercourse The sperm travel to the fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg. The moment of conception occurs in the fallopian tube

  5. Conception •the sperm cell and the egg cell fuse together to form one cell which is called the zygote •the zygote contains all the characteristics that the person will have

  6. The zygote begins rapid cellular division

  7. Trip to the Uterus •the zygote begins rapid cellular division •the fertilized egg moves slowly down the fallopian tube, taking about 3 days to reach the uterus where it continues to grow

  8. The fertilized egg moves slowly down the fallopian tube, taking about 3 days to reach the uterus

  9. Implantation

  10. The zygote burrows itself into the uterine wall or endometrium

  11. Upon implantation the zygote is now called an embryo

  12. The cells quickly divide, and soon the shape of a human baby becomes visible • This usually occurs by the end of the second month • At this time, the embryo is now called a fetus
