  3. Present Perfect & Narrative Past When talking or writing about events that happen in the past, one must use past tense. There are two options in German. Present Perfect & Narrative. Present Perfect: uses a past participle with a helping verb(habenodersein). Narrative Past: uses a simple form: the main verb in the past tense.

  4. Present Perfect • The present perfect tense is used in conversational exchange. • Formed by combining an auxiliary verb with the main verb. • Uses haben or sein • to have: hat gehabt • to go: istgegangen • to buy: hat gekauft

  5. Conjugation of Haben and Sein

  6. When to use Haben • Use haben when not indicating motion • Verbs that use accusative. • Haben is considered an auxiliary verb. • Example: Ichhabegegessen I have eaten

  7. More Examples of Haben • Erhatgelacht, alswirihmgratulierthaben. He laughed when we congratulated him • Ichhabe in Münchengewohnt. I used to live in Munich • ErhatGeigegespielt. He played the violin

  8. When to use Sein • When an action verb is used. • When in motion and moving from a certain place(example: gehen, fliegen). • Examples: Ichbinheutegegangen. I have gone today Use seinbecause you are talking about being in motion.

  9. Let’s sum it all together • Erhatgelacht, alswirihmgratulierthaben. He laughed when we congratulated him • SieistnachHausegefahren. She has driven home You should be able to notice the different use of haben and sein. Remember that the “ge” that has been added These indicate the present-perfect tense.

  10. Narrative Past (Simple Past) • The Narrative Past is used when narrating a series of events, usually written down. • Describes events that have happened in the past but are not yet fully completed. • Main verb used in past tense. • Only change the finite (conjugated verb).

  11. Conjugation of Regular Verbs Examples: Ichsagte dir das. I told you Erspielte Golf. He played Golf WirmachtenKuchen. We made cakes

  12. Narrative Past • Must change the verb to the past tense. Example: • He played golf. Would become “Erspielte Golf” Notice adding the –techanges the sentence into past tense.

  13. Conjugation of Irregular Verbs • There are small group of verbs that follow their own conjugation rules and must be learned on their own. • Conjugate according to the personal pronoun. Examples: Brennen, denken, rufen, gehen The conjugation of gehen turns into gingen
