  3. EXAMPLES • English is my best subject, I always do well on my tests. • Soccer is his favorite sport, he is the best player on the team.

How do I correct a CS? • Place a period between the two main clauses or sentences. • Add a comma after the conjunction to form a compound sentence. • Use a semicolon between the two sentences. • Ex. 1 • English is my best subject. I always do well on my tests. • English is my best subject, so I always do well on my tests. • English is my best subject; I always do well on my tests. • Ex. 2 • Soccer is his favorite sport. He is the best player on the team. • Soccer is his favorite sport, and he is the best player on the team. • Soccer is his favorite sport; he is the best player on the team.

Using one of the three grammar fixes, correct them. • Thomas made the baseball team, I congratulated him the next day. • The movie was boring, I fell asleep before it ended. • My dog is very playful, she hides my shoes often. • The weather forecast calls for rain, our camping trip will be postponed.

  8. How do I correct a FS? • Fused sentences can be corrected in the same fashion as a sentence with a comma splice. Additionally, you can also use conjunctive adverbs such as: however, then, therefore, consequently, furthermore, hence, thus, undoubtedly and others. • Sharon Draper is one of my favorite authors.   11. TYPES OF SENTENCES Simple sentence. Cheesecake is my favorite dessert. Compound Cheesecake is my favorite dessert, but sweet potato pie is a close second. Complex Although I enjoy cheesecake and sweet potato pie, I am not the best baker.

Things to note • Compound sentences are typically formed using coordinating conjunctions such as: for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so (FANBOYS) • Complex sentences use subordinating conjunctions. These include: although, because, until, while, since, after and many others. • If the dependent clause with the subordinating conjunction comes at the beginning of a sentence, you need a comma; consequently, if the dependent clause is at the end, it does not require a comma. • Although she was very talented, she did not win the singing competition. • She did not win the singing competition although she was very talented.
