Tony Flow & The Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem • The Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) formed in 1983 at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, CA. • The Original Members were Anthony Kiedis (Vocals), Michael “Flea” Balzary (Bass), Hillel Slovak (Guitar), and Jack Irons (Drums). • First Performance for The RHCP was under the name Tony Flow & The Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, and was to an audience of about 30. • The performance was an impromptu performance where Kiedis rapped a poem he wrote called “Out in L.A.” and the band played in the background. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37883Ra-q_A

The Red Hot Chili Peppers • After the band’s success after the first performance, the members decided to change the band name to The Red Hot Chili Peppers. • The Band played for several months in clubs and venues around LA until they were picked up by EMI in early 1984. • What is This? was signed around the same time by MCA, and Slovak and Irons left The RHCP to focus on their project.

  4. The Bands Style • The RHCP’s sound has been described as rock with an emphasis on funk. • There is also some elements of punk rock and psychedelic rock • The Band usually plays with a large amount of energy and have a punk rock attitude.

Band Members • Hillel Slovak • Original Member, left then returned for Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Died from drug overdose in 1998 • Jack Irons • Original Member, left then returned with Slovak, fell into deep depression after Slovak’s death, joined Pearl Jam years after death • Chad Smith • Filled in for Jack Irons, continues to play with The RHCP • John Frusciante • Joined after Slovak’s Death, left after Blood Sugar Sex Magik, rejoined to make Californication and was with the band until 2008 when he left for a solo project. • Josh Klinghoffer • Joined the band during the Stadium Arcadium tour singing back up vocals, and playing keyboard and guitar. Officially joined the band in 2010

The Band’s Success • The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold over 80 million albums worldwide and have one 7 Grammy Awards • Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 (Frusciante was not present at the ceremony). • The band has topped the charts with many songs over their career.
