The Issue… How can faculty and administrators engage students in the classroom, attract prospective students, and compete on a global level with other institutions through social media while keeping students and the campus community safe and teaching them how to make wise decisions when creating their online branding profile?

  3. The Rise of Social Media

  4. Facebook Statistics • One in every nine people on Earth is on Facebook ( This number is calculated by dividing the planets 6.94 billion people by Facebook’s 750 million users) • People spend 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook • Each Facebook user spends on average 15 hours and 33 minutes a month on the site • More than 250 million people access Facebook through their mobile devices • More than 2.5 million websites have integrated with Facebook • 30 billion pieces of content is shared on Facebook each month • 300,000 users helped translate Facebook into 70 languages • People on Facebook install 20 million “Apps” every day

YouTube Statistics • YouTube has 490 million unique users who visit every month (as of February 2011) • YouTube generates 92 billion page views per month (These YouTube stats don’t include videos viewed on phones and embedded in websites) • Users on YouTube spend a total of 2.9 billion hours per month (326,294 years)

  6. Twitter Statistics • 190 million average  Tweets per day occur on Twitter (May 2011) • Twitter is handling 1.6 billion queries per day • Twitter is adding nearly 500,000 users a day

More Statistics • Google+ • Google+ has more than 25 million users • Google+ was the fastest social network to reach 10 million users at 16 days (Twitter took 780 days and Facebook 852 days) • Flickr • People upload 3,000 images to Flickr (the photo sharing social media site) every minute • Flickr hosts over 5 billion images

  11. Growing Trends • University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research conducted a social media adoption study to show the rising trends of students and their growing use of technology between 2008-2011.

University of Southern Florida • Plans on doing a Foursquare Scavenger Hunt for Homecoming so students can check-in at the different events and earn prizes • Created one location that houses a directory of every official USF-affiliated Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and blog site • Mass Communication Professor required students to create their own twitter accounts so they can interact with their peers outside of the classroom. The professor also hosted study reviews and answered class questions all via Twitter.

Syracuse University • Hosted a three day acapellaand social media conference in 2011 • Each individual workshop had a unique Twitter hashtag so members not in attendance, along with the audience, could comment and ask questions during the event. • The use of Twitter was so popular that the conference coordinators are keeping the group together by continuing to tweet about news and future events.

TURN IT UP Social Media Pillars of Responsibility Think before you click You cannot delete or retract many of the interactions you have online Make posts understandable     Do not use slang, too many acronyms, or anything else that would make your posts hard to understand Respect everyone          You never know who is reading your posts Network outside of your circle          Join conversations and build relationships with others Create an identity - use a recognizable name          Allow people to find you online. Use privacy settings to your advantage, but do not completely block yourself Betruthful in online communication          Be honest - do not spread gossip or stories that may be false or hurtful    Your reputation is universal  Online communication is an extension of you as a person Receive permission before posting anything online          Ask people before posting photos or tagging them in text

Connecting to the internet at Middle College? • When students connect to the internet for the first time, they will be asked to read the Social Media Pillars of Responsibility and complete an activity that follows • The activity is designed to keep students engaged and actively recall information they just covered concerning responsible social media usage • After completing the activity the first time, the student will be exempt from the activities until they change their password after 90 days. At that time, they will need to complete the activity again. • If students successfully complete the activity, they will be granted internet access. If they fail to completely the activity accurately, they will be redirected back to the Pillars and asked to try again until they are successful.

Conclusion • Encouraging students to use social media on campus should be welcomed, but also monitored • We can provide students with resources to be responsible social media users • Middle College can work to implement further social media guidelines in the future. • Gathering feedback from students will be vital to this process.
