  3. IMPORTANT REMINDERS • Please ensure all of your child’s belongings are labeled. These include backpacks, sweaters, lunchboxes, books, supplies, etc. • Please cover all notebooks and workbooks with contact paper.

  4. Silent Reading Book Students must have a silent reading book with them every day.

  6. Daily Schedule

  7. Lunch & Snack 3rd grade will have snack daily in the afternoon. Please send in a snack for your child and a water. No other liquids are allowed within classroom. Students are permitted to have whatever drink they’d like in the cafeteria. Feel free to send in an envelope with child’s name for emergency lunch money. SJHA is a nut free zone. We also have a nut free table at lunch. NEW LUNCH PRICES: $6.50 WITH DRINK $1.50 FOR ICECREAM

MATH Helpful Links: Engage NY 3rd Grade Link Eureka Parent Support Grade 3 Common Core Standards • We will be using the Eureka Math Curriculum • Some areas we will be covering: • Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Area, Liquid Volume, Mass, Rounding, Telling Time, Tape Diagrams, Number Lines, Graphing.

Helpful Links: Grade 3 Common Core Standards Engage NY Reading Module Our Literacy Block is combined with: Writing, Phonics (Quiz), ELA, Spelling (Quiz) WIthin 3rd Grade we will be reading several stories from our reading textbooks, novels, and other grade appropriate books. Most reading comprehension tests are open book. Some focuses: Main Idea, Cause-Effect, Story Elements, Figurative Language, Sequencing, Fables, Compare/Contrast, Citing Evidence from the Text, and Dig Deeper within our texts.

ELA & Writing Some areas of Focuses: Types of Sentences, Nouns, Verbs, Subject/Predicate, Abbreviations, Writing Addresses, Use of Apostrophes, Commas, and Quotation Marks, Correctly writing Titles. Students have a journal they will be writing in on a weekly basis. Students will utilize Google Classroom for some writing assignments. Goals for 3rd Grade: Restating questions within extended response answers. Citing from the text. Writing with more details.

  12. Phonics & Spelling Phonics instruction allows children to explore, internalize, and apply new knowledge so they can gradually achieve greater independence with reading and writing. Some Focuses: Blends, Digraphs, & Vowels. No formal spelling curriculum. Spelling words lists will be given on a weekly or biweekly basis. Words will be selected from other subjects or words commonly misspelled within student’s writing.

  13. Blended Learning This is a mix of technology and traditional face-to-face instruction. Blended learning combines classroom learning with online learning, in which students can, in part, control the time, pace, and place of their learning. We will have centers during Reading & Math.

  14. Religion Religion tests every Thursday. Notes are given in preparation for each chapter. Virtue of the Month is discussed within class. Bully Lessons are conducted on a monthly basis.

  15. Science & Social Studies Students will switch rooms for these subjects twice a week. Ms. Fortuna will be teaching Science. Ms. Donato will be teaching Social Studies.

  16. Handwriting Beginning in 3rd grade, students are expected to only write in cursive.

  17. GYM Held on Mondays. Gym uniform is only to be worn on gym days.

  18. Other Specialty Classes

  19. Using the engineering design process, students identify problems, develop and test possible solutions, and ultimately reach a solution. Why do STEM? It helps to inspire students to develop a lifelong interest and understanding of what otherwise might be difficult to understand subjects. It’s a great opportunity to begin to explore the world from an open and academic perspective. Gives students an opportunity to fail, figure out their mistakes, try again, and persevere. Essential skills needed to strengthen their academic career throughout adulthood. We will be conducting several STEM projects a month.

  21. Test Folder & Test Corrections Test Folders will be given out on a weekly basis and at times biweekly depending on makeups and review. Please sign test folder sheet found within folder. Return all tests in folder once done reviewing. Test Corrections must be done on all tests that are lower than 70%. Beginning in November, a point will be taken off for misspelled words. Spelling corrections may be done on the test itself or a separate piece of looseleaf.

  22. Standard Scores & Assessments Students will be taking a MAP assessment in Reading, ELA, and Math this month. MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test created by NWEA that kids take two to three times per school year. The results provide teachers with information to help them deliver appropriate content for each student and determine each student’s academic growth over time. NWEA MAP Parent Info Website

  23. State Tests 3rd grade is the first testing year for the ELA and Math State Exams. Test Prep will begin during the second half of the school year.

  24. Homework will be given on Monday-Thursday. Test Schedule is given every Friday in preparation for tests the following week. Students will write homework in notebook and it will be posted on class website. Please sign homework every night.

  25. New School Website St. Joseph Hill Academy Website Click Elementary School-> Classroom-> 1st-5th Grade-> 3rd Grade -> Ms. Donato Homework will be posted daily. Test Schedule will be posted weekly. Important reminders and photos will be posted on site.

  26. Students will be introduced to Google Classroom to assist in strengthening writing and editing skills. Gmail accounts and passwords will be given during the upcoming weeks.

  27. Provides comprehensive leveled reading resources for students. With hundreds of eBooks offered at 29 different levels of reading difficulty, it's easy to put the right content in every student's hands. Kids access their leveled text through an interactive learning portal designed to keep them motivated and engaged.

  28. Reading Log & Journal Reading Log will begin soon. Students must read for 20 minutes every night. They must log their reading on Google Classroom. A template will be provided. Students will pick one prompt weekly and write their response on Google Classroom.

  29. Class Dojo Used as a behavior management tool. Points can be obtained or taken away.

  30. Challenge Bucket Each student has a folder containing material for review, fun activities, as well as challenging material. Students will be given an opportunity to complete the worksheets during down time, if they finish an activity early, or during teacher choice.

  31. Morning Procedures Quickly and quietly unpack. Morning message and morning work is posted on the board. Morning work given: Handwriting, math and reading spiral review, journal prompt, or Target workbook. Teacher will check homework. Principal Announcement, Morning Prayers, and Pledge. Day officially begins at 7:45. Please do not leave emails after 10:45 am
