  4. IF • If is used in general truth, habitual present, and past. It is also view in present hypothetical and past hypothetical.

  5. Exercises of IF: Choose the correct form of verb • I (telephone) my family this weekend if I (stay) on campus. • Could you see who is at the door? If that (be) my sister, she (have) the charcoal for the barbecue. What happened in one of your classes elementary, middle, or high school if: • A student walked in 20 minutes late to class? • A student did not turn in the homework assignment? Complete: If I had had a chance…

  6. Unless & Only If Unless •  Definition of unless is except when, if not.  • Unless with a subject and verb means only if or except if in positive and negative sentences. The other part of the sentence gives the possible result

  7. Unless & Only If Only if • Definition of only if never except when. • Only if can be used to connect the main clause and the if-clause to express a more restrictive condition. • It is possible in all types of conditionals.

  8. Exercise of Unless & IfComplete the sentences • You'll be sick unless ---------------. • Unless he was very ill, ---------------------. • I wouldn't have passed the exam unless ----------------------. • You will have a delicious dinner only if ------------------------ • Only if you cook your turkey like this, ------------------------ • Not unless someone can drive me to the party ----------------

  9. If … not versus Unless • Use the same meaning with the present tense and past tense. • Ex: • I will be on time unless there is traffic jam on the highway.  I will be on time if there is not traffic jam on the high way. Unless can’t always be used instead of IF … not • In questions; Unreal in future; Unreal in the past • Ex: • What will happen if you don’t have high score on the final test? • If I had not passed the exam, I wouldn’t have to study in abroad.
