Working with Themes • Use themes to apply a consistent, professional look to documents. • Customize theme colors and fonts, or even save your own custom themes. • Delete a custom theme you no longer need. • Reset a document to the default theme for its template to remove custom theme formatting.

Customizing Themes • The default Normal.dotm template includes a number of built-in themes. • A theme is a combination of colors, fonts, and effects. • The default theme is named Office, but you can apply one of the other built-in themes to a document. • Or, you can download additional themes or create a custom theme.

  4. Creating Custom Theme Colors The theme colors determine the colors applied to different styles of text and different objects in the document. To create custom theme colors, click the Theme Colors button in the Themes group of the Page Layout tab, and then click Create New Theme Colors to open the Create New Theme Colors dialog box. 5

  5. Creating Custom Theme Colors Click the color button beside any theme color to change, and then click the desired color in the color palette. Type a name for the custom theme colors in the Name text box, and click Save. 6

  6. Resetting Custom Colors Click the Reset button in the lower-left corner of the Create New Theme Colors dialog box to reset the theme colors to the default for the Office theme. This enables you to start over if you do not like a color combination you’ve selected. 7

  7. Applying Custom Theme Colors • Custom Theme colors appear at the top of the Theme Colors gallery. • Click the Theme Colors button in the Themes group of the Page Layout tab, and then click the desired custom theme to apply it.

  8. Using the Colors Dialog Box • To access more colors when creating custom theme colors, click a color button and then click the More Colors option. • Select the desired color using either the Standard or Custom tab of the Colors dialog box that appears, and then click OK.

  9. Creating Custom Theme Fonts You also can specify an alternate collection of fonts to apply. Click the Theme Fonts button in the Themes group of the Page Layout tab, and then click Create New Theme Fonts. Select a Heading font and Body font, type a Name, and click Save. 10

  10. Applying Theme Effects Use the choices on the Theme Effects gallery in the Themes group of the Page Layout tab to apply line sets and fill effects to text. You cannot create a custom theme effect, but you can apply a theme effect and save that choice as part of a custom theme. 11

Saving a Custom Theme • When you have created custom theme colors and custom theme fonts and applied them to the document along with any theme effects, you can save those settings as a custom theme. • Click the Themes button in the Themes group of the Page Layout tab, and then click Save Current Theme. • Enter a name for the custom theme in the File Name text box, and click Save.

  13. Editing Custom Theme Colors and Fonts You can make changes to the custom theme colors and custom theme fonts that you have saved. In the Themes group of the Page layout tab, click either the Theme Colors or Theme Fonts button. Right click the theme colors or theme fonts to change, and click Edit. Make the desired changes in the dialog box that appears, and click Save. 14

  14. Resetting to Template Theme • You can reset the document back to the default Office theme. • Click the Themes button in the Themes group of the Page Layout tab, and click Reset to Theme from Template.

  15. Deleting Custom Theme Colors or Fonts You can delete custom theme colors or custom theme fonts that you have saved. In the Themes group of the Page layout tab, click either the Theme Colors or Theme Fonts button. Right click the theme colors or theme fonts to change, and click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion. 16

  16. Deleting a Custom Theme Delete a custom theme that you’ve saved in the Save Current Theme dialog box. In the Themes group of the Page layout tab, click the Themes button and click Save Current Theme. Click the theme to delete in the dialog box, and click the Delete button on the dialog box toolbar. Click Yes to confirm the deletion, and then click Cancel to close the dialog box. 17

Select and save the custom theme colors in the Create New Theme Colors dialog box. Custom theme colors appear at the top of the Theme Colors gallery. Create custom theme fonts to update fonts throughout the document. Specify a heading font and body font in the Create New Theme Fonts dialog box. Apply a theme effect to change the line and fill for text and other elements. Save the currently applied theme colors, theme fonts, and theme effects as a custom theme. Edit or delete custom theme colors or fonts when needed. Reset a document to the default Office template to remove other theme formatting. Wrap Up
