Measuring Alcohol in the Body Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) : Mass per volumeof blood in the body (Eg: 0.08 g/L) (150/body weight) x (% alcohol/50) x ounces consumed x 0.025 = BAC Examples: Suppose a person weighing 126 lbs drinks a 12 oz beer with 5% alcohol, what is his BAC? 150/126x 5/50 x12x 0.025 = .0357 = .04 Suppose he weighs 250 lbs? 150/250x5/50 x12 x0.025 = .0225 = .02

  9. Liver Metabolism A 150-pound person with normal liver function metabolizes about 7 to 14 grams of alcohol per hour. This is comparable to 8 to 12 ounces of beer or half of an alcoholic drink. Controlling the rate of consumption will give your liver time to metabolize the alcohol and limit your BAC. Once you stop drinking, your blood alcohol level decreases by about 1.5% per hour. You are legally intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08. Time is the only way to eliminate alcohol from your system, so cold showers and coffee will not sober you up. Trying to get someone who is drunk to feel and appear more alert can cause a false sense of sobriety and result in many problems.

Answer: .21 x .015 = .00315 .21 - .00315 = 0.20685 Interpretation: Your liver does not remove alcohol from you system very quickly!

  11. Problems for Practice Continued 2. A tourist consumed 5 liters of beer at dinner. If 1 can of beer is 12 ounces (oz), how many cans of beer did the tourist consume? 1 ml = .03 oz 1 L = 1000 ml • Answer: 5x1000 = 5000 • 5000x.025 = 125oz • 12512 = 10.4 beers!!!!
