  1. Migrating Voice Mail to Unified Messaging and Interoperability Designing VPIM Solutions

  2. Guidelines for VPIM Solutions • Message format • Message addressing • Locations (numbering) • Cisco Unity Voice Connector • Subscribers

  3. What Are VPIM Messages? VPIM Message MIME (Forwarded Address) MIME (Spoken Name) MIME (Text Message MIME (Fax) vCard

  4. Example: Similarities and Limitations ofCisco Unity Messaging vs. VPIM Messaging • Marked urgent = Retrieved urgent • Marked private = Retrieved private • Read and delivery receipts = Delivery receipts • E-mail without voice attachment = Rejected

  5. What Are the Options for VPIM Addressing? • Options for VPIM addressing: • VPIM subscriber (names, extensions) • Blind addressing

  6. Example: Address by Name joseph@celeste.com Standard SMTP Address

  7. Example: Blind Addressing and VPIM Networking • Information about the address does not exist, so: Blindly send the message to the dial ID in the delivery address. 433 5654

  8. Example: Subscriber Experience with Blind Addressing 433 5654 To get the message to Joseph, Jessica has to add the location dial ID to the message. Location 433 The actual message sent to the other Cisco Unity will look like: [VPIM:<Delivery Location Dial ID>_<Remote Mailbox Number>]

  9. What Are Locations? Cisco Unity A 766 VPIM-Compliant Messaging Server 765 IP Network Primary Location 763 Delivery Locations 764 765 766 Cisco Unity C 764 Cisco Unity B 763

  10. What Is Cisco Unity Voice Connector? Cisco Unity with Interop Gateway Receives incomingMessage VPIM Domino Partner Server with Lotus DUCs Installed IP Network VPIM Exchange Partner Server with Cisco Unity Voice Connector Installed Sends Message Out Cisco Unity sends the message to Exchange

  11. Example: How Cisco Unity Voice Connector or Interop Gateway Processes Outgoing VPIM Messages • Constructs To address • Hands off to Exchange and Cisco Unity Voice Connector • Converts message to MIME • Formats To address • Formats From address • Converts to G.726 • Attaches recorded name or vCard • Puts out for delivery

  12. Example: How Cisco Unity Voice Connector or Interop Gateway Processes Incoming VPIM Messages • Verifies from delivery location • Removes phone prefix • Validates recipients • Converts to MAPI • Converts voice to specified codec • Hands message back for delivery

  13. What Are VPIM Subscribers? Cisco Unity tracks which subscribers are local and which are VPIM. VPIM • VPIM subscribers can be created • with the System Admin tool one at a time. • Use the bulk import tool to • create VPIM Subscriber in bulk. • Cisco Unity can be set to create • VPIM subscribers automatically • when a VPIM message is received. Local

  14. Example: Subscriber Experience with VPIM Subscribers • Address messages via phone • Listed in address book • Voice name confirmation • Part of distribution lists

  15. Creating VPIM Subscriber Creates Extension Address • Creating a VPIM subscriber creates an e-mail address from the location and remote mailbox number. The @Companyname.com is added from the Delivery Location page with dial ID 433. 433 5654@Companyame.com VPIM:<Delivery Location Dial ID>_<Remote Mailbox Number>

  16. Summary • When designing a VPIM network, you must define a number of parameters. They include addressing considerations, Cisco Unity Voice Connector placement, locations, and how subscribers will address messages to VPIM destinations. • A VPIM message is a segmented message containing message header, voice message, source voice name, and possibly other fields such as a vCard. • Messages to a VPIM destination may be addressed either via blind addressing or by creating VPIM subscribers that point to the corresponding voice-mail servers.

  17. Summary (Cont.) • There are two types of locations used in VPIM: primary locations that identify the local server and delivery locations that identify remote VPIM destinations. • The Cisco Unity Voice Connector is used as a gateway to convert the SMTP message to a MIME message and then forward it to the VPIM destination. • The VPIM subscriber has some limitations but overall is capable of performing most tasks that a Cisco Unity subscriber can perform.
