    5. Choosing senior subjects A number of factors should be considered when choosing senior subjects Can I pass this subject? Will I enjoy this subject? Do I want to study this subject because it is a pre-requisite for the tertiary course I would like to do after school Can I gain bonus points for this subject for certain universities? Is this a subject which may help my chances of gaining an apprenticeship or other employment (industry pathway).

    6. Tertiary Pre-requisites Subject prerequisites are the subjects you study in Year 11 and 12 that are stated by universities, TAFE and colleges as necessary for you to complete at the required level to qualify for entry to particular courses. Subject prerequisites are expressed as minimum achievement levels in specific senior subjects. For example, English (4,SA) indicates that the QSA Authority subject English must have been studied for four semesters and an overall exit level of a Sound Achievement (C) or better obtained.

    7. Other terminology used by Tertiary Institutions Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of achievement in a Senior subject considered necessary for successful first year tertiary study. However it is not an entry requirement. Recommended Study – some subjects might be recommended in order to undertake a course more successfully but are not entry requirements.

Bonus Points awarded by Tertiary Institutions ACU, Griffith University, QUT and UQ are operating Bonus Rank Schemes for Current Year 12 students applying to commence tertiary study at these universities in the following year. These schemes recognise achievement in a range of study areas. Bonus ranks may be awarded for successful completion of specific Queensland Year 12 subjects such as Languages other than English (LOTE) and Maths C, and some university-level subjects. Australian Catholic University also awards bonus points for a range of other Queensland Year 12 subjects relevant to the course applied for.

UQ Bonus Point Scheme Students applying through QTAC to UQ will be awarded bonus points towards their entry rank on the following basis: 2 points for passing an approved language other than English (LOTE).  2 points for passing the Queensland Studies Authority Mathematics C (or equivalent as determined by UQ). 1 point for successfully completing a university level enrichment course at university concurrently with the senior program (for example, the UQ Enhanced Studies Program). The maximum bonus for any one student is 5 points. The maximum LOTE bonus per student is 2 points and the maximum enrichment bonus is 1 point, irrespective of how many subjects have been studied.

Griffith University Bonus Point Scheme Under the scheme, students will receive on the university rank scale: 2 ranks for passing Maths C 2 ranks for passing a Language other than English 1 ranks for successfully completing GriffChem, GriffPhysics and other University studies taken in high school or the Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Study program and recognised equivalents from other tertiary institutions A maximum of 5 bonus ranks can be applied under the scheme. For example if a student does a language as well as extension language 2 points will be offered for each.
