  2. Holland Theory • People can be classified into 6 different groups • Groups are called Occupational Themes: • Realistic • Investigative • Artistic • Social • Enterprising • Conventional

  3. Realistic: The Doers • Do jobs that produce tangible results, concrete • Work with their hands, tools, machines • Generally described as practical, physically strong, rugged, adventurous, self-reliant

  4. Realistic • What kind of car might they drive? Chevy Truck, 4-wheel SUV, Jeep • What kind of vacation would they take? Camping, fishing, golf school • What do they read? Western and adventure novels, home repair booklets, ESPN magazine

  5. Investigative: The Thinkers • Problem-solvers • Interpret data/information • Generally do well in math and science • Described as curious, independent, rational, self-motivated, analytical

  6. Investigative • What kind of car might they drive? Bicycle, Volvo, “Hybrid” • What kind of vacation would they take? Archeological dig, space camp, African Safari • What do they read? Scientific journals, real-life crime novels, consumer reports

  7. Artistic-The Creators • Enjoy art, music, poetry, reading, being creative • Described as self-expressive, independent, creative, non-conforming, free-spirted • Comfortable in academic settings

  8. Artistic • What kind of car might they drive? Volkswagen Bug, PT Cruiser, Mini Cooper • What kind of vacation would they take? NYC to see Broadway shows, Venice to see art • What do they read? Pulitzer prize novels, book reviews, rolling stone magazine

  9. Social-The Helpers • Like to work with people • Enjoy helping, nurturing, teaching, volunteering, social charities, sharing responsibilities • Solve problems through discussions of feelings and interactions with others • Generally described as idealistic, cooperative understanding, kind, ethical

  10. Social • What kind of car might they drive? Mini-van, SUV, suburban • What kind of vacation would they take? Cruise with family/friends, Disney land, habitat for humanity • What do they read? Oprah magazine, Nora Roberts novels, self help books

  11. Enterprising-The Persuaders • Enjoy working with people and leading them to an organizational goal • Enjoy leading committees, groups, organizations • Seek positions of leadership, power, status • Generally described as persuasive, adventurous, competitive, risk-takers • Are motivated by networking and collaborating

  12. Enterprising • What kind of car might they drive? Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, high end SUV • What kind of vacation would they take? Luxury cruise, spa retreat, week in the Hamptons, anywhere they can network • What do they read? Wall Street Journal, Steven Covey books

  13. Conventional-The Organizers • Pay attention to organization, detail and accuracy • Enjoy mathematics and data management activities (accounting/financial management) • Generally described as practical, orderly, precise, accurate, careful, conscientious

  14. Conventional • What kind of car might they drive? Buick, Honda Accord, fuel efficient • What kind of vacation would they take? Site-seeing historical city, pre-programmed tour, same beach house every year • What do they read? Real Simple magazine, investment magazines, Martha Stewart magazine
