2. Why we have procedures Are you a little bit unsure of how to get the teacher's attention? Embarrassed because others may laugh at you if you do the wrong thing? Welcome to the club! We all feel that way at some time. That is why it is good to know what is expected of you. By knowing the procedures, you will be happier in the classroom. Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures for using a dictionary, boarding an airplane, driving on the highway, and attending a wedding. The reason we have procedures in life is so that people can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient ways other people do things. These are the procedures needed to maximize your class time and to make your work the most efficient. As the year proceeds, I will give you additional procedures, as the need arises. Imagine you are in church, would you talk or get out of your seat while the pastor is talking?

4. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS • - Raise your hand to be called on before speaking. • - Treat others politely-as you would like to be treated. • - Do not touch other people or their things. • - Walk calmly and quietly in the hallways.

5. Consequences for Breaking Rules • Step 1 End of Line • Step 2 Separate at Lunch • Step 3 No P. E. • Step 4 Call Parent • Step 5 See Principal

6. Tattling • Tattling will not be tolerated. • You will have a note sent to your parents if tattle on someone. • If the tattling persists you will be sent to the office to see the Principal. • You are allowed to tell me about someone bullying, someone who is hurt, someone who is cheating, someone who is sick. • You all know what tattling is please don’t do it.

7. Bullying • Did you know that bullying isn't just someone punching you in the face or a bully calling you a name that you don't like? Bullying is a lot more than that. There are even different types of bullying. • Physical bullying includes any physical contact that would hurt or injure a person like hitting, kicking, punching, etc. Taking something that belongs to someone else and destroying it would also be considered a type of physical bullying. • Verbal bullying is name-calling, making offensive remarks, or joking about a person's religion, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or the way they look. 3. Indirect bullying includes spreading rumors or stories about someone, telling others about something that was told to you in private, and excluding others from groups. • Social alienation is when a bully excludes someone from a group on purpose. It also includes a bully spreading rumors, and also making fun of someone by pointing out their differences. • 5. Intimidation is when a bully threatens someone else and frightens that person enough to make him or her do what the bully wants. • 6. Cyberbullying is done by sending messages, pictures, or information using electronic media, computers (email & instant messages), or cell phones (text messaging & voicemail).

8. Talking and staying in your seat • Remember there is no talking without permission during class time. • You are not allowed to get out of your seat without permission • Keep your hands and feet to yourself. Do not put your feet on another persons desk. • Act the same way you would if you were in the principal’s office, church, wedding, etc…...

9. Walking in the Hallways and out Doors • Students must line up single file, in number order. • Hands must be buckled behind you • There is no talking till we are outside the building • You must stay at least 3 feet behind me when going through doorways. • Never get away or in front of the teacher.

10. Entering the classroom • Enter the room quietly • Go directly to your assigned seat • Begin work immediately • Remember there is no talking without permission during class time. • You are not allowed to get out of your seat without permission • The only thing you should come to class with is your pencil and missing assignments.

11. Bathroom breaks • Going to the bathroom should be done before school, at lunch, at P. E. time, and after school. • All other bathroom breaks will be considered an emergency. You may have to get permission from the principal to take an emergency restroom break. • The same goes for water breaks. Please take care of this on your own time.

12. When you need a writing utensil or paper • Sharpen pencils at the beginning of the class and at the end of class • Have a pencil at your desk at all times. • Remember backpacks are not allowed in the classroom, please hang them outside on a hook. • All written work will be done in a spiral notebook given to you by the teacher. (do not tear the pages out) and loose papers will be put in binders. • Paper is not for notes, airplanes, etc. you could be sent to principals office if you are doing this • Raise your hand to put trash in trash can, any one throwing paper will be given a consequence

13. Coming to attention • Teacher will count down from five. • Look at the teacher • Stop talking • Listen for instructions • Continue working when instructed

14. Asking a question or participating in class discussions • Raise your hand • Wait to be called on • Ask your question or give your comment in a few words • Save your funny stories and tell me at lunch

15. Getting materials without disturbing others • Quietly walk directly to where the materials are located • Get your materials • Return directly to your seat • Continue work • Most of the time I will pass out books or I will pick someone.

16. Indicating whether you understand • Look at the teacher • If you don’t understand, raise your hand, wait to be call on, then ask your question • If you understand, say “yes, sir”

17. When you need a writing utensil or paper • Sharpen pencils at the beginning of the class • Have several pencils at your desk at all times. • Paper will be given out by the teacher and only when I feel it is necessary. • Paper is not for notes, airplanes, etc. • Crayons map pencils, backpacks, etc. should not be brought to class keep them on a hook

18. Saying “thank you” • Look the person in the eye who you are thanking • Say “thank you,” followed by the person’s name • Explain why you are thanking them • Smile • Thank you should be said whenever someone does something nice for you

19. Exchanging papers • Exchange papers with the person next to you. • If you don’t have a partner, exchange with the closest person to you. • Do not refuse to exchange papers with someone. • Please grade you neighbors paper correctly or you will receive a failing grade.

20. If you finish early • Read your AR book • Work ahead on other assignments • Finish any missing assignments • You must always have an AR book with you that is on your reading level

21. Accelerated Reader • All books read in the 4th grade will be chapter books and I will chose them for you. • I do not use the point system. You simply have to read 1 chapter book per week. • Once you finish a book you must let me know before you test on it. • Please read your book thoroughly before testing. • We will have an A. R. party once a month. Those that do not make their goal will have to copy the dictionary while we are having the party.

22. Class work Reading • Always wait for the teacher to tell you when to start • When answering reading questions you must show in the text where you got your answer either by underling, highlighting, or writing page and paragraph number. • Failing to do so will cause you to get the problem wrong even if you put down the right answer. • Cheating will not be tolerated and you will be sent to the office

23. Class work Math • Always wait for the teacher to tell you when to start • Do not work ahead • When answering math problem you must show your work at all times • Failing to do so will cause you to get the problem wrong even if you put down the right answer. • Cheating will not be tolerated and you will be sent to the office

24. Tardy • The responsibility of getting to class on time is an integral part of Greenville's standard of excellence, which prepares students for success. • Although we do make allowances for occasional, unforeseen issues that cause tardiness, consistent tardiness cannot be permitted.   • For everyone’s sake, please make sure that your parents get you to school on time.

25. When you are absent • You are responsible for missing work • You will have 2 days to complete the missing work • If you are planning on being absent, notify the teacher ASAP to get the assignments beforehand

26. End of class dismissal • The teacher dismisses the class, not the clock or the bell • Keep your desk and area clean at least 3 ft around your desk. • Put your materials away • Exit quietly • Don’t forget homework assignments and notes from school

27. When a school-wide announcement or class page is made • Stop what you are doing • Listen to the announcement • Then continue working quietly • Do the same if we have a visitor in the room

28. When visitors are in the classroom • Continue with your work • Be polite to the guest, answer questions if asked • Maintain work if the teacher is called away • If appropriate, engage in conversation with the visitor, but only when asked to

29. If the teacher is out of the classroom • Continue with your work • Maintain the classroom guideline and procedures

30. Walking in the hallway during class time • Line-up single-file in the classroom • Be quiet • Proceed out the door, without talking, in a single-file line • Listen for instructions while walking in the hallway • Walk on the right side of the hallway • Wait outside the destination until you have permission to enter

31. Responding to a fire drill • Line-up at the door • Listen for the teacher’s instructions • Exit the room to the right • When you get outside, go across the playground and stop, no talking • Once across the street, check in with the teacher

32. Responding to a tornado drill • Line-up by the door • Listen for the teacher’s instructions • Exit the room to the right • Go down the hallway toward cellar and enter quietly • Stand in a straight line • Be quiet and aware for instructions

33. Math • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must show your work on every problem or it will be counted wrong • Cheating will not be tolerated • We will work on one skill all week and then have a test over that skill at end of the week • We will have multiplication facts tests daily. • All papers not written in your spiral must be 3 holes punched at placed in binder

34. Reading • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must underline or hi-lite on all assignments unless told other wise. • Cheating will not be tolerated • We will work on one skill all week and then have a test over that skill at end of the week • All papers not written in your spiral must be 3 holes punched at placed in binder

35. Science • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must underline or hi-lite on all assignments unless told other wise. • Cheating will not be tolerated

36. Social Studies • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must underline or hi-lite on all assignments unless told other wise. • Cheating will not be tolerated

37. Writing • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must underline or hi-lite on all assignments unless told other wise. • Cheating will not be tolerated • Students will write on a given topic weekly

38. English • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must underline or hi-lite on all assignments unless told other wise. • Cheating will not be tolerated • Students will practice English skills throughout the week

39. Spelling • Do not start assignments until told to do so • You must underline or hi-lite on all assignments unless told other wise. • Cheating will not be tolerated • Students will study daily spelling words from a weekly list and then have a test over words at end of the week

40. Classroom Rewards In this day and age of teaching, we as educators spend far too much time dealing with negative behavior. I use my Big Bucks system to focus on the positive and use positive peer pressure to correct the negative. It is simple……. I give virtual money for behaviors I like and take away money for the behaviors I want to eliminate. Kids love $$ and don't want to have to pay me! I sell simple things like Activity Time, Treasure Box, Candy, Etc…..
