  1. Human Development Chapter 9

  2. Developmental Psychology • The branch of psychology that explores physical, emotional, cognitive and social aspects of development.

  3. Pre-natal Development • How much of our development is due to nature (genes) and how much is due to nurture (environment)? • Most psychologists today feel that heredity and environment are closely intertwined.

  4. Nature v. Nurture • Simple genes- physical traits such as eye or hair color. • Multiple genes- complex traits such as behavior

  5. Maturation • The biological unfolding of an organism according to its underlying genetic blueprint. • Kids with tall parents tend to be tall • Nutrition, prenatal care both tend to play a factor • Influences of nature vs. nurture begin to take shape in the womb.

  6. Stages of Prenatal Development • Sexual reproduction began 240 to 320 million years ago when a single chromosome mutated to for the X and Y sex chromosomes. • Male- X and Y chromosomes • Female X and X chromosomes

  7. X and Why? • Each reproductive cell contains only one copy of the two sex chromosomes. • A sperm cell carries either one X or one Y chromosome. • The ovum (egg) cell carries only one X. • When the ovum is fertilized, the combination (XX or XY) determines the sex of the baby.

  8. Pregnancy • Pregnancy is divided into 3 stages of prenatal development; • The Germinal Stage • The Embryonic stage • The Fetal stage
