Multicom Resource Package - Aims • The purpose of the resource package is to help students • become more effective multilingual communicators • develop a broader and more flexible repertoire of written communication • acquire international communication and organisational behaviour-related skills • The resource package introduces • theoretical principles (socio-linguistic, professional and cultural) • ‘real’ life case studies and practices • the use of traditional and emerging technologies Multicom Curriculum Development Project-Writing

  4. Multicom Resource Package - Aims • The resource package brings together • written • spoken • visual communication. • It locates the learning event in challenging organisational settings engaging multinational and multilingual cooperation. Multicom Curriculum Development Project-Writing

Learning outcomes On completion, students can: • write clearly, accurately and correctly on a variety of subjects and for a variety of purposes • use forms of written communication, based on multilingual sources, in standard business situations, ranging from company internal communication (minutes, memos, reports, proposals) to visually more complex forms of corporate advertising • use combined sources of communication (oral, written, visual, multimedia) • provide written translations from different types of language A documents into languages B and C, and from languages B or C into language A Multicom Curriculum Development Project-Writing

Learning outcomes • structure information and draft a contract in language A/B/C • draw up business communication documents like letters, emails, messages • design and work out materials for electronic release and use (newsletters, blogs, websites) • use language A, B or C efficiently to design and work out promotional (persuasive) materials (advertisements, leaflets, brochures, posters) for specific business environments • use the language A, B and C to issue press releases, mission statements, briefings, and communicate with the media.   7. Assessment procedures • The outcomes of the resource packageare assessed through • formative (permanent) and • summative (final) assessment. Assessment methods comprise: • written tests (including tests of knowledge and skills) • project work (team, pair or individual) • portfolios • written essays or reports • presentations • field reports • reflective writing. Activities • Assignments include 3 areas of focus • Improving Ryanair International Image • NGO fund-raising campaign for girls’ education in X country • Low energy architecture and building materials • 4 phases • Research - Sources used: academic journals, online media, questionnaires, interviews, reports, summaries, synthesies • Information sharing –individual or group work and • Presentations • Communication of results – Digital or poster format, simulated press conferences, presentations, panel discussions etc. Multicom Curriculum Development Project-Writing

Activities • All package tasks are unit-linked and designed as interactive team-work tasks. • Tasks are built on communication theories and principles, and incorporate both • language issues and • specific text-based conventions. • Each unit is focused on the development of specific writing competences, on general business writing skills and specific skills, including sub-skills. • The provided tasks rely on complex combinations of written, spoken, visual and cognitive skills (sub-skills). Activity 1: International Low Cost Airline Companies • Study documents in several languages to evaluate the international image of low cost airline companies with a view to improving it Student tasks • gather information • take notes from sources in different languages: websites, consumer reports, customer care reports, newspaper articles, face-to-face talks/interviews with customers, talks with company customer service manager • analyse information and assess it critically • organise information for a report • organise the information for a press conference • organise the information for a press release • draft the documents (a report, notes/pp presentation for a a press conference, a press release Multicom Curriculum Development Project-Writing

Activity 2: NGO fund-raising campaign for girls’ education in X country • Design/plan a fund-raising campaign employing innovative ideas and produce the necessary documents (twitter, magazine, video...) Student tasks • Study documents in several languages and identify media supports for the campaign (gather data and write some notes on findings) • Organise meetings (take minutes in note form, draft the minutes, produce a report) • Use brainstorming to identify innovative fund-raising ideas • Discuss the forms of advertising to be used and choose the most efficient one(s) • Study the local style for news writing • Produce the advertising documents (twitter, magazine, video...) in the language of X country and in two more languages to reach a broader public. • Sources PR companies, national government site of X country, education and youth programmes’ sites Multicom Curriculum Development Project-Writing

Activity 3: Eco-friendly cork products used for insulation • You work for a cork insulation material producer based in the Algarve region and wish to distribute/market cork products on the European market. Identify ways of distributing products and find business partners in EU countries. Study online and offline documents in languages A, B and C about cork products and produce the necessary documents (synthesis of collected data, memos, business proposals, contracts etc.). Student tasks: • Study online and offline documents in several languages (language A, B and C) about cork products and Algarve. Activity 3: Low energy architecture and building materials • Identify the European market demand for eco-friendly cork products and ways of distributing cork products to other European countries • Collect data, translate the information and write a synthesis on the collected data • Study the European laws and directives on the distribution of cork products Use the information provided in RP A3: EU directives. • Write a memo to the company board of directors and stakeholders informing them on the initiative to find new markets • Write a business proposal to the company board of directors suggesting ways to solve the problem • Draw up a draft contract for the distribution of cork products by XYZ company. Translate the contract into the language of the partners
