  1. USNWR #25!…and a roadmap for reaching the Top 20. March 20, 2012 Presented by Brent Turner, MBA ‘99 President, Owen Alumni Board of Directors

  2. This UNWR ranking is significant because: • Our strategy specifically calls for a #20 ranking in UNWR by 2015. • #25 is our second highest ranking, ever. • Owen was #49 when Dean Bradford took over in March 2005. • Many stakeholders are willing to help but want to see progress first. • We see this as validation that our strategy will work.

  3. A quick re-primer on rankings US News – More Quantitative GMAT / GPA Placement Rate at Graduation Compensation BusinessWeek – more subjective Student Satisfaction Survey Recruiter Survey Faculty Reputation (smaller)

  4. A brief recap of Owen’s strategy • Achieve an immediate increase in student quality in the Core MBA program by lowering the class size, increasing the applicant pool, leveraging alumni to recruit prospective students, and aggressively funding scholarships. • Meanwhile, increase the number of students going through focused, innovative, one-year programs in health care, finance, and accounting. • Leverage recently-endowed chairs to recruit outstanding faculty and boost the prestige of the Vanderbilt program. • Market our graduates with relentless discipline, focus, and innovation. • Enhance Vanderbilt’s perception to both recruiters and deans of other schools by conducting an exhaustive rebranding of the Vanderbilt story. • Address the urgent need for an upgrade in facilities.

  5. We are executing well. • 695 average GMAT is the highest in school history. • One-year programs are succeeding in both student quality and employer satisfaction. • We are hiring outstanding faculty. Recently: Dawn Iacobucci, E. Bronson Ingram Professor of Marketing Steven Posavac, E. Bronson Ingram Professor of Marketing Robert Whaley, Valere Blair Potter Professor of Management in Finance • Our placement scores are improving. This year’s UNWR survey is up over 15 points from 2010. We have the right team and the right focus. • “This is Vanderbilt Business” re-brand has been well-received by all stakeholder groups and effective in positioning the school well. • Early positive response to building feasibility study.

  6. Our move into the Top 20 will depend on us overcoming competition in placement. Was 653 in 2010 Was 54% in 2010

  7. We need our alumni to step up. • Recruit Vanderbilt Graduates. Every time an alumnus hires an Owen grad before graduation, our placement stats move forward by 0.6%. • Help students find jobs. Our alumni are not responsible for getting our graduates jobs. However, we should all pitch in and help. • Contribute financially. Discretionary dollars are critical boosts to scholarships and the greatest needs at the school. • Recruit students to Vanderbilt. Every time a star student chooses Owen, our school gets that much stronger. • Keep your info current in VUConnect. We need to reach you!
