  6. Windpod G1 Data

  7. How it works • Wind turbines operate on a simple principle. The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. • Wind turbines are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more above ground, they can take advantage of faster and less turbulent wind. • Wind turbines can be used to produce electricity for a single home or building, or they can be connected to an electricity grid (shown here) for more widespread electricity distribution. • http://greenterrafirma.com/wind%20turbines.html

  8. GENERAL COMPONENTS OF A WIND TURBINE

  9. HelixWind Data

  10. How It Works for HelixWind • As the wind blows the long helical blade scoops catch wind from all directions forcing it through the turbine. The turbine generator is connected directly to your home and as electricity is generated your home is powered. If the wind isn’t blowing your home is powered by the energy grid as usual. If the wind is blowing strongly then your energy produced can exceed your energy consumed and, depending on your local utility, your meter can spin backwards rolling back your energy bill.

  15. Location Options • Boston, MA • State College, PA • Pittsburgh, PA • Philadelphia, PAWashington, D.C.

  16. What we chose… • Boston, MA • Highest wind speed • One of the higher costs for electricity in the U.S. so make most during sell back

  17. Building Options • Parking Garage • Beaver Stadium (PSU) • Medlar Field (Spikes Stadium) • Heinz Field (Steelers) • Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles)

  18. What we chose… • Medlar Field (Spikes Stadium) • Ample places to accommodate turbines • Uses a lot of electricity • High places to extract extra wind • Strong posts and features to hold turbines

  19. Wind Turbine Options • Hawt- Traditional • Vawt- Helix Wind • Vawt- Traditional • Sideways Vawt- Windpod • Wind Ball

  20. What we chose… • Both the Vawt- Helix Wind and the Sideways Vawt- Windpod • Good payback • Good ratio for purchase price to energy conversion • Good conversion of wind energy to electricity • Safe for birds and quiet for fans • Compatible with current features

  24. How Does It Work? • Works in winds as low as 10 mph • Cupped helical design scoops wind from only one side, so the turbine spins freely • Savonius turbine based design allows for 360 degrees of “usable” wind • Generator is connected directly to stadium for useful AC current with the use of an inverter
