  4. Politics • Conservative • Opposed Confederation • Was both a Senator and a member of the House of Commons • Mayor of Montreal • Solicitor General of Canada

  5. Rise to Power • Interim Prime Minister after Macdonald’s death • Supported Thompson but Conservative party wanted him to succeed instead

  6. Issues faced as PM • Dealing with issues caused by Macdonald’s death • Revisions of the criminal code • Trade agreements with the United States • Manitoba Schools Question • Corruption • Civil service reform

  7. Final Days • Attempted to turn over leadership 12 months into his term to Thompson but was prevented by the party • Experienced initial stages of brain cancer • Retired due to ill health
