  2. Joint Undertaking SES AR Forewords • ATM Service Levels for Transatlantic flights have to increase, especially in view of a sustainable aviation growth • As a natural consequence of the planned implementation of SESAR and NextGen, Transatlantic ATM Service Levels will increase on both ends • Where AIRE fits in • Conducting integrated demonstrations • Ensuring that scope of SESAR and NextGen are extended to cover Oceanic operations • Secure involve of Nav Canada and other stakeholders such as ICAO NAT SPG in the process and stimulate the definition of an Oceanic roadmap • Push for coordination routines and decision mechanisms between SESAR and NextGen to ensure interoperability. Define interoperability roadmap.

  7. Joint Undertaking SES AR High-Level overview: the forthcoming AIRE Call for Tender • Objectives • Performance of integrated flight trials and demonstrations validating solutions for the reduction of CO2 emissions for transatlantic flights • Projects shall • Be performed during 2008 and 2009 • 1 to 2 pilot projects per focus area: Surface, Terminal and Oceanic (indicative) • Integrate efforts from several stakeholders such as Airlines, Airports, Aircraft Manufacturers and Air Navigation Service providers • Integrate all aspects of AIRE: link to SESAR, Transatlantic focus, mitigation of GHG, emphasis on communication • Geographical scope of demonstration (place of performance) • Trials shall be performed on the territory of states involved in Single European Sky

  10. Joint Undertaking SES AR Starting point Meant as a support to the implementation of SESAR and NextGen, the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emission (AIRE) was announced in June 2007 by Jacques Barrot (EC Vice-President and Transport Commissioner) and Marion C. Blakey (Administrator FAA). • It has 4 objectives: • Accelerate development and implementation of environmentally friendly procedures for all • phases of flight, from gate-to-gate • Capitalize on gateway airports already using advanced technology and best practices • Provide a systematic overall program approach with short, medium and long-term objectives • Validate improvements with flight trials and demonstrations • Initial European partners included: • Airlines: Air France, KLM, SAS, Virgin Atlantic • Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs): IAA (Ireland), LFV (Sweden representing North • European ANSPs), Nav Portugal, DGAC (France), LVNL/NLR (Netherlands) • Airframe industry: Airbus • Institutional partners: European Commission, Eurocontrol
