Health education and health promotion in the French school system • “Health education” is not a subject • Students do not have to complete credits in health education in order to graduate • It is included in different subjects: citizenship, biology, physical education … in elementary and secondary schools • The guidelines (1990, 1998, 2006) for drawing up school policy, promote a broad approach • The “health and civic education committee”

  3. Teacher training in France: structure • In France, teachers are trained for 3 years at the different departments of the university to a primary degree level • followed by a further 2 years in specific institutes inside the universities

  4. Teacher training in health education and health promotion: challenges • Affirming and reinforcing the work done in teacher training in HE and HP • Supporting the institutes in the provision of ITT and ISTT • Organising trainers’ training • Stimulating partnership work at regional level • Developing HE and HP training tools
