  1. Standards in Action Workshop Building a Profile of TC211 Standards for the National System of Geospatial-Intelligence 31 October 2007 United States Contribution

  2. Geospatial Intelligence Standards Working Group (GWG)

  3. GEOINT Standards Working GroupInaugurated January 2005 Working as a Community: • Eliminate duplicative standards investments that deliver the same or similar capabilities • Bring subject matter experts together within the DoD and IC to fully address GEOINT standards matters • Enhance our ability to manage and shareGEOINT data among disparate groups

  4. GEOINT Standards Working Group • Leverage ongoing standardization efforts in the GEOINT industry as well as in DoD, and internationally • Establish broad-based “focus groups” to serve as a forum for coordinating standards activities • Manage GEOINT standards for the NSG community via the DoD Information Technology (IT) Standards Registry (DISR) • Ensure that standardization efforts are closely aligned with implementation requirements and schedules • Develop a GEOINT standards process that implements this strategy “The formation of this new standards body [GWG] demonstrates a growing realization that geospatial applications must be standards-based if GEOINT is to be a world class citizen. Without continuing adherence to industry standards, spatial applications and programs simply cannot interoperate with other enterprise system components.” Geospatial Solutions Magazine, June 2005

  5. The National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG) is the integration of technology, policies, capabilities, and doctrine necessary to conduct geospatial intelligence in a multi-intelligence environment NSG Community Model

  8. Metadata Focus Group Purpose • Serve as a Community-based forum for standardization and interoperability of metadata of GEOINT data • Serve as technical advisory group to the GWG • Coordinate the GEOINT Community activities to address all aspects of GEOINT metadata • Identify requirements for metadata of GEOINT data

  15. GWG Metadata Focus GroupNSG Geospatial Core Metadata Profile (NGCMP)

  16. National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) Geospatial Core Metadata Profile (NGCMP) • The purpose of this geospatial profile is to establish and define a systematic approach to managing, organizing, and disseminating standards to the development population. This document also establishes and maintains agreement between the customer and the project team on changing standards. • Levels of NSG Geospatial Metadata - Various metadata profiling and harmonization efforts are being undertaken across the NSG community, among them the influence of current ISO standards development work to support NSG metadata requirements. To achieve this, metadata is developed at several different levels, and the GWG Metadata Focus Group (MFG) has developed recommended core metadata sets for each of these levels for use in the NSG community.

  17. Basic Standards • International Standard ISO 19115:2003, 8 May 2003, Geographic Information – Metadata • Technical Specification ISO/TS 19139:2007 - Geographic information - Metadata - XML schema implementation • Department of Defense Discovery Metadata Specification (DDMS), Version 1.4.1, 10 August 2007, published by the DoD Metadata Working Group • Intelligence Information Sharing Standards, Resource Metadata: Application Profile for Discovery (IISS RM: APD), Version 1.0., 1 Jul 2004 (formerly known as Intelligence Community (IC) Standard for Core Metadata (e.g. IC Core)
