  2. Topics for today • c-Class Blades – A Brief Overview • Why VirtualConnect? • What is VirtualConnect? • VirtualConnect details • HP BladeSystem c-class - other news and updates

  3. Server blades: • 2x features, 2x the density • Onboard Administrator: • Local rack status view • Simple set-up delivered out of the box 10U 8-16 blades • Integrated power: • Simplified configuration and greater efficiency • Same flexibility, capacity and redundancy c-Class Blades

  4. c-Class Blades Active Cool Fans Interconnect Bays Onboard Administrator Active Cool Fans Venting Power Management

  5. Bay 1 Bay 2 Bay 3 Bay 4 Bay 5 Bay 6 Bay 7 Bay 8 c-Class BladeSystemInterconnect Modules for Every Need Interconnect Types • Ethernet & FC Switches • Reduce cables with your favorite switch brands • 4x DDR InfiniBand Switch • Highest performance IB • Pass-Through Modules • When you must have a 1:1 server/network connection • Virtual Connect • The Simplest, most Powerful connection to your networks • 8 Interconnect Bays • Two of same module side-by-sideprovides redundancy

  6. Virtual ConnectThe simplest, most flexible connection to your networks

  7. Simplify & make your data center change-ready • Simplify networks • Reduce cables without adding switches to manage • Simplify server connections • Cleanly separate Server enclosure from LAN & SAN • Change servers in minutes, not days • Add, move, & replace servers fast without affecting your LANs or SANs

  8. Traditional serverseveryone must follow the moving server! NIC NIC NIC NIC HBA HBA HBA HBA Server Administrator • LANs talk to MAC addresses & • SANs talk to World Wide Names • When Server/NIC/MAC moves, LAN needs updating • When Server/HBA/WWN moves, SAN needs updating • LAN & SAN admins must react to server movements, schedule actions • Server maintenance demands coordination of Server, LAN & SAN MAC addr Network Administrator A LAN ENET Switch WWN B Storage Administrator C FC Switch SAN Spare process speed often depends onhow many people touch it a 30 minute task isn’t done in 30 minutes, if 3 people & 3 days are needed to schedule it Blade Enclosure

  9. Virtual Connect solves these& makes IT change-ready Server Administrator Network Administrator NIC NIC NIC NIC A LAN HBA HBA HBA HBA B HP Virtual Connect Modules Storage Administrator C SAN Spare Blade Enclosure • Reduces cables without adding switchesNo new FC domains! • Maintains end-to-end connectionsof your favorite brands(Cisco, BNT, Brocade, McData, etc.) • Cleanly separates Server from LAN & SAN • Relieves LAN & SAN admins from server maintenance w/o affecting their authority (their work is done after deployment) • Servers are Change-Ready – add, move, replace, upgrade w/o affecting LAN or SAN • MAC & WWN are locally administered so LAN & SAN connections stay constant Change servers when your business needs it, not when you can fit it into everyone’s calendar Server-Edge Virtualization (abstraction layerbetween servers & networks)

  10. ExampleWire-Once and LAN & SAN are done! Traditional Switch/Pass-through Environment Virtual Connect Environment • install rack & enclosure • cable blade switches/pass-thrus to LAN & SAN switches Later, when needed • Add new server • Install server • Get LAN connection • Get SAN connection • Add new server • Install server • Get LAN connection • Get SAN connection • Add new server • Install server • Get LAN connection • Get SAN connection • Install rack & enclosure • Cable switches/pass-thrus to LAN & SAN switches • Assign all LANs & SANs to pool of 1 to 4 enclosures (1-64 servers) Later, when needed • Install new server & connect • Install new server & connect • Install new server & connect

  11. ExampleVirtual Connect Server Sparing: Fast + affordable Traditional Switch/Pass-through Environment Virtual Connect Environment • Either fast or affordable • Fast N+N:$$buy 2 for every 1 you need • assign same LANs & SANs to both • on failure use hot standby • Affordable N+1:1 spare for N servers • replace failed server with spare • update LANs • update SANs • Fast + Affordable • N+1:1 spare for all your c-Class servers • assign all LANs & SANs to Virtual Connect pool of servers • replace failed server w/spare • connect spare to failed server LANs & SANs

  12. Build a Virtual Connect environmentwith your c-Class enclosure Virtual Connect Ethernet Modules • Connect selected server Ethernet ports to specific data center networks. • Supports aggregation/tagging of uplinks to data center. • ‘LAN-safe’ for connection to any data center switch environment (Cisco, Nortel, HP ProCurve, etc.) side by side for redundancy + Virtual Connect Fibre Channel Modules • Selectively aggregate multiple server FC HBA ports (Qlogic/Emulex) on a FC uplink using NPIV. • Connect enclosure to Brocade, Cisco, McData, or Qlogic data center FC switches. • Doesn’t appear as a switch to the FC fabric. + Virtual Connect Manager (embedded!) • Manage server connections to the data center without impacting the LAN or SAN • Administer server MACs, WWNs, and boot parameters. • Move/upgrade/change servers without impacting the LAN or SAN Virtual Connect domain can pool 4 enclosures as one.

  13. simplify & make your data centerchange-ready • Simplify networks Reduce cables without adding switches to manage • Simplify server connections Cleanly separate Server enclosure from LAN & SAN • Change servers in minutes, not days Add, move, & replace servers fast without affecting your LANs or SANs

Port Number & Status Indicators Indicates whether a data center link (green), stacking link (amber), or highlighted port (blue).

  16. VC-Enet Modules may be Stacked Any server NIC can access any data center uplink 10GE ports still available as additional stacking links or data center uplinks • 4 enclosures, 64 servers in Virtual Connect Domain • Every server in domain has access to any data center LAN connection • Every server has fault-tolerant access to every uplink port • With this stacking method, every Virtual Connect module still has 8 -1GbE and 1 -10GbE uplink ports available Virtual Connect Ethernet Modules 10 GbE Internal Cross-Connect c-Class Enclosure

  18. Does not participate in data center STP Automatic loop prevention inside VC Allows aggregation of links to data center networks (LACP and fail-over) Supports VLAN tagging on egress or pass-through of VLAN tags Supports Link Layer Discovery Protocol How do VC-Enet uplinks look from the data center network perspective? 23. HP Virtual Connect FC Module uses N_Port_ID Virtualization • Defined by the T11 FC standards • FC Device Attach (FC-DA) Specification, Section 4.13 • FC Link Services (FC-LS) Specification • “NPIV provides a Fibre Channel facility for assigning multiple N_Port_IDs to a single N_Port, thereby allowing multiple distinguishable entities.” • Where is it used? • When implemented within a FC HBA, allows unique WWNs & IDs for each virtual machine within a server • Can be used by a transparent HBA aggregator device (like HP VC-FC module) to reduce cables in a vendor-neutral fashion.

  24. N_Port_ID Virtualization As used by HP VC-FC module With an HBA aggregator 1 FLOGI X ACC X Server #1 (WWN A) HBAAggr. Doesn’t interfere with server/SAN compatibility. Works with a wide range of Brocade, McData, or Cisco FC Switches (with recent firmware)
