  2. Armistice: temporary peace The history of Veteran's Day begins with Armistice Day, on November 11th, when all fighting nations of World War I ceased fighting.

  3. Clangor: loud ringing sound Only on Christian holidays do all of the bells of the Notre Dame in Paris ring, a clangor that can be heard from up to a mile away.

  4. Connoisseur: expert, one who is qualified to pass critical judgment. One might say that I am an ice cream connoisseur; I have tried extreme flavors such as goat cheese vanilla, spicy peanut butter and bacon banana split.

  5. Cupidity: eager desire for something; greed The man's cupidity for material possessions was unparalleled, and he ended up in jail for theft.

  6. Epoch: distinct period of time, era The treaty ushered in an epoch of peace and goodwill.

  7. Heresy: opinion different from accepted belief Galileo was convicted of heresy for contributing scientific evidence that the Earth revolved around the sun, which went against religious teachings that stated the Earth was the center of the universe.

  8. Paragon: model of excellence or perfection Jesus is a paragon of love, mercy and kindness. We should all strive to be like him.

  9. Misnomer: unsuitable or misleading name Mike called his new dog "Killer", which was something of a misnomer as the dog was a tiny Pomeranian.

  10. Rejoinder: a reply to a reply, especially from the defendant in a legal suit. When asked how old she was, the woman replied with the rejoinder "I am old enough".

  11. Respite: period of relief or rest The week of Thanksgiving is a respite for both teachers and students from homework, quizzes and tests.

  12. Retribution: repayment, deserved punishment Danny's retribution for not paying attention in class? Hours of homework each night.

  13. Vanguard: foremost part of an army, leading position in any field The army vanguard is responsible for seeking out the enemy and securing ground in advance of the other troops.
