  2. Affront -- noun or verb An offensive act or word It was an affront to the school board when no one voted for any of the candidates.

  3. Despondent – adj. Feeling hopeless; low in spirit The wife was despondent after the death of her husband.

  4. Oppressive – adj. Weighing heavily on the senses or spirit The 102 degree heat became oppressive after being outside for two hours.

  5. Awe -- noun An extreme feeling of admiration or wonder The crowd stood in awe of the fireworks display.

  6. Elaborate – adj (not the verb!) Detailed and complicated in design The team played an elaborate hoax on their coach that required the whole school to take part.

  7. poise -- noun A dignified, self-confident manner The President must always present himself with poise even when being criticized.

  8. commence -- verb To begin As soon as everyone arrives, we will commence the meeting.

  9. Tangible-- adj. able to be touched or felt; having substance The defendant was convicted because of the tangible evidence presented in court.
