Manson’s History • Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1934 to 16 year old Kathleen Maddox • She ran away at age 15, drank, and went to jail for periods • Age nine started stealing • burglary and stealing cars • Married in 1954 and had a son, went to prison for a year and got divorced • After out of prison, continued conning people, stealing cars, and got remarried • Was sent to prison again, and divorced

  3. Masons History (cont’d) • Spent 6 years in prison • Began playing the guitar and singing, went to San Francisco with several followers • Tried to advance his music career with the help of Terry Melcher • Moved to the Spahn Ranch with followers, became the cult compound for “The Family”

  4. What was the Crime? • July 1st 1969, shot Bernard Crowe for threatening the family • July 25th, held Gary Hinman hostage for 2 days, cut off his ear and then was stabbed to death.

(cont’d) • August 8th, Tate murders • told 4 of his followers to go to 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles and kill everyone inside • Shot 4 times Steve Parent and stole his car • Shot twice and stabbed 7 times Jay Sebring • Shot twice, stabbed 51 times and beat him with a gun, WojciechFrykowski • Stabbed 28 times Abigail Folger • Stabbed 16 times Sharon Tate and Unborn baby

  6. What was the crime? (cont’d) • August 9th, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were stabbed

  7. What was he convicted of/what sentence did he get? • Convicted of conspiracy of the murders in junction with the murders themselves • Got sentenced to death but then changed to life when California’s law changed

  8. Why did he commit the crimes? • He told his “Family Members” that he predicted an upcoming race war was going to occur in the summer of 1969 (blacks were going to rise up against whites) • The Beatles song “Helter Skelter”

  9. Caught! • The Tate, Hinman, and LaBianca detectives were all working separate until LaBianca discovered similarities with the Hinman case. • Hinman had some of the members of the Manson Family in custody • Then arrested Manson and other members when they raided a ranch and found stolen dune buggies

  10. Manson’s psychological disorder • bi-polar • paranoid schizophrenic • slightly hebephrenic(childish with facial grimaces) • conduct disorder • antisocial personality disorder • delusions of grandeur and reference
