  2. Purpose of this Session Principals will be able to identify design components and features of the NY 9-12 ELA Curriculum Modules. Principals will be able to identify rigorous instruction for inquiry in the ELA Curriculum Modules. EngageNY.org

  3. Welcome Back • Table Discussion • Based on the two curriculum overviews for 9th and 10th graders, what do you believe will be your school’s greatest challenge to ensure that the CCSS are implemented with fidelity? EngageNY.org

  4. The “Research” Unit • Traditional Research Paper • Linear • Starts with hypothesis • CCSS-Aligned • Inquiry instruction that supports research • Cyclical • Starts with seed text EngageNY.org

  5. Lesson Plan Review • Each Table will review two lesson plans. • Lessons are designed for rigor; review the lessons to determine where your teachers and students might struggle during implementation. • Text complexity • Vocabulary • Writing • Assessments EngageNY.org

  6. Inquiry in Practice • Watch the video. • What would a school leader expect to observe if the lesson is being effectively aligned to the module? • Choose an Evidence Guide indicator. • Write a CCSS-aligned instructional practice embedded within the lesson that is emphasized within the indicator. • Determine the observable teacher actions that would reflect the aligned practice. EngageNY.org

  7. Instructional Challenges What do my students not know and what can they not do in relation to argument writing or inquiry/research? What part of the teacher’s instruction is missing in targeting these gaps? What knowledge do I need to build in order to support this work in my school? What knowledge do my teachers need to build, and what is my plan to support them? EngageNY.org

  8. Action Planning • Create an Implementation Plan for your school: • Overarching Goal and Rationale with Implementation Steps • When will the step begin and end? • What are the existing and new resources that will be used to accomplish this step? • Who is responsible for ensuring that this step is accomplished? • How will we know that this step was accomplished with fidelity and quality? • Issues we need to think about when implementing this Action EngageNY.org

  9. Reflection on Modules 9.4 and 10.3 • Argument Writing and Inquiry Instruction • What are the differences between what you are used to seeing and what is in the CCSS-aligned curriculum? • What challenges will your teachers have? • Content • Instruction • Assessment EngageNY.org
