  1. TITLE: STATES OF MATTER AT THE ATOMIC LEVEL • TARGET GROUP: Grades 9-12; College Tech Prep Chemistry /Physical Science

  2. OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to : • Use models to explain atomic structure. • Describe the size of the atom. • Compare atoms according to relative size and mass. • Using SMD software, students will understand how atoms undergo changes of state.

  3. Students will be able to :1.Identify parts of the • 1.Identify parts of the atom.2.Explain modern atomic theory.3.Compare atoms and list them in terms of size.4.Graph atomic radius vs. atomic number.5.Construct models of gases, liquids and solids.6.Explain and describe similarities and differences between phases

  4. INTRODUCTION • Mechanical Universe Tape Series: Models of The Atom. • SMD movie. • open SMD player Excerpt from Issac Asimov’s,”The Atom”.

  5. ACTIVITES: • 1. Grain of Sand Experiment.2. SMTD interactive software.3. Average Atomic Mass Experiment.4. Construct models of atoms in the gas, liquid and solid states

  6. ASSESSMENT: • 1. Test on atomic structure.2. Discuss SMTD movie on introduction to states of matter.3. Laboratory Grading Rubric.4. Present or construct a model describing the three phases of matter in the activity section.
