  2. BLAST is. . . • A fifth year program for students with unmet vocational needs based on their IEP. • A transition program for students with disabilities. • A program that provides support services outside of the classroom.

  3. BLAST is not. . . • A financial aid program • Although paid tuition is a benefit of the program, students are required to pay for their books, program materials, transportation(unless disability states otherwise) and housing. • A career exploration program or a program in which students can major.

  4. Requirements to get into the Program • Under 21 years old. • Enrolled in a high school program and receive special education services. • Have unmet vocational training needs on the current IEP. • Completed career exploration activities leading to a specific vocational training goal. • Complete all required academic courses for high school graduation, but still have unmet vocational needs in the IEP.

  5. Steps to enter IWCC • Fill out an application for the college • Take the Compass/Asset test • High School completes BLAST preparedness questionnaire with student and forwards to BLAST advisor. • Student completes interview with IWCC Program Chair and BLAST advisor.

  6. Steps to enter IWCC cont. • LEA and BLAST team update student’s IEP to include BLAST support services, updated goals, and LRE requirements. • Deadline for Fall is May 1 and deadline for Spring is November 1. • Student signs the BLAST contract

  7. Requirements in the Program • Complete an Academic Strategies class. • 2 hours required study time in the BLAST lab. • Attend seminars once a month. • Attend all classes regularly. • Complete assignments on time. • Access disability services necessary for success. • Communicate with instructors and BLAST coordinator and learning specialist.

  8. Goal of the BLAST program • To successfully transition students with disabilities to the regular college environment. • Students should be able to independently access disability services necessary for success in college.

  9. BLAST programs • BLAST students can take any career or technical program where they can earn a certificate, diploma, or AAS degree. • BLAST students cannot take programs that require a transfer to a 4 year college to complete the degree.

  10. Eligible Programs for BLAST • Culinary Arts • Diesel Mechanics • Auto Mechanics • Turf and Landscape • Wind Energy • Construction • Dental Assisting • Dental Hygiene

  11. Eligible Programs cont. . . • Medical Assisting • Practical Nursing • Radio Broadcasting • Surgical Tech • Vet Tech • Business • Early Childhood • Etc.
