Weapplyanewlydevelopedspatiallycoupledinversiontechniqueto high-resolution Hinode SOT/SP observationsof a sunspot. A height-dependentatmosphericstructureisobtainedthathasledto a unifiedobservationalpictureofsunspotpenumbralfilaments, andhasgivennewinsightsintotheirphysicalnature.
