What happens in June? • 21 million children receiving free/reduced-price lunch through National School Lunch Program (NSLP) in the U.S. • In CA, 80% of the kids receiving free/rp lunch (2 million kids) not participating in a similar program in summer months • Worsens conditions of food insecurity, puts low-income kids at greater risk of obesity • The safety net of the school year is gone

The Opportunity • USDA Summer Food Options for Schools • Serve healthy, free meals to low-income kids • Connect kids with summer activities • Nutrition education (in a fun way!) • School districts best equipped to do this • Meal reimbursement supports overall child nutrition portfolio • Kids return to school in the Fall, healthy and ready to learn • Opportunities for long-term, sustainable community partnerships
