  4. REPORT WRITING You will have two classes (today and tomorrow) to work on a Professional Business Report. This assignment will be graded, and it includes a lot of the formatting we have done. A model report has been posted online, and it happens to be about your report expectations! Use it to help guide your own work. Open the model report and we will go through it together.

  5. Title page • Everything is centred, vertically and horizontally • Title is bolded and in larger font • By, for, class, date are consistently formatted • No footers or headers on title page • No images

  6. Table of contents • Title bolded and centred • Double spaced • Page numbers are right aligned • Customized tab leaders (dots) are used – but they are not just a bunch of periods……………..! • Every heading in the report gets a place on your table of contents

  7. Executive summary • Summarizes your report in one paragraph • In the real world, this is often the only section that is read, so it has to be good! • Concise and strong

  8. Introduction • A paragraph (with heading: Introduction) that literally introduces your topic • Nothing complicated about it, but people tend to overthink them • One sentence is not enough – instead, it is like announcing the agenda of your report

  9. Body • The body is the meat of your report • It includes your arguments or main points • In the model report, the body consists of ALL the headings and paragraphs that are sandwiched between the introduction and the conclusion • Your report should have at least three body paragraphs (with one heading per paragraph) between your introduction and conclusion

  10. Formatting and Other • Footer: Page numbers will be bottom centred • Header: Full name will be top, right aligned • Header: Report title will be top, left aligned • No headers or footers on title page • Spacing: 2.0 throughout, but headings should be distinguished from text using spacing or formatting • Margins at 1” all around • Include at least one picture with border, heading and source • Include at least one numbered or bulleted list

  11. CONCLUSION • Just like your introduction, this paragraph (with heading: Conclusion) simply concludes your report • It provides a summary of your topics and restates your main point at the end • Try not to overthink it!

  12. REFERENCES • Heading: References or Works Cited • It is absolutely expected that you cite your information • Citationmachine is a great website that helps generate citations

  13. Report Topics • How students can relax on March Break • How to make sure your desk is ergonomic • Description of a foreign city or country • Description of a good movie or book • Description of a current event • Or run one by your teacher….

  14. How do I start?! • When you pick a topic, try to think of your main point. What is the whole reason for writing the report? • How will you organize your information?  This will help you pick the headings. • Suggestion: write the report first. Format later. • If you follow the formatting rubric, you will have no problems getting a good formatting mark!
