  1. Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 • Last lesson we studied the ideas of David Gauntlett. Without looking at your notes, what can you remember about what he said? Time Big Stuff! Gods! Lego gardens Making things! Media in the Online Age

  2. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 More Gauntlett stuff! Working as a group of 3 or 4, each of you will go to a corner to study a piece of writing by Gauntlett. Number yourselves 1-3/4. You can only write a 20-word summary to then take back and feed back to your group in 5 minutes time.

  3. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 Prosumer Jot down this key term. Which words does Gauntlett blend together? Why has he created this new term?

  4. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 Part of what you have to do in your essay is show you’ve understood the work of theorists like Gauntlett. But more than that, you have to engage in the debate yourselves. It is perfectly fine, in fact good, to disagree with the views he puts forward… In other words, have an opinion!

  5. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 Gauntlett suggests that the blending of the roles of producer and consumer has led to new levels of creativity in our society – that it is a good thing. Do you agree with him? Place yourself on an opinion line in the class – from Total Agreement on one side to Total Disagreement on the other! ?

  6. Total agreement with gauntlett – The new ways of making texts have been an entirely good thing

  7. COMplete disagreement with gauntlett – The ‘prosumer’ has ruined everything that I loved in this world

  8. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 Vs. Andy Ruddock (not a tennis player) has disagreed with Gauntlett, in a kind of ‘theory argument’. Ruddock says that Gauntlett goes too far in getting rid of the concept of a mass media audience for traditional work. Who do you agree with most and why? Ruddock Discuss with your partner 3 minutes

  9. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 Gauntlett himself addresses some of the critics of Web 2.0 and the problems that some other Academics have with his ideas in this video… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQp3q_z47ys&hd=1 07.06-09.09 !

  10. Media in the Online Age Media Theory: Gauntlett lesson 2 OK – that’s nearly it for today: Sum up what you’ve learnt about Gauntlett and his critics in the form of… A status update on facebook Or A tweet Share it with 2 other students and me before you leave!
