  1. Stress • Stress-the body’s reaction to change. • Distress-prevents you from doing what you need to do or causes discomfort. • Eustress-can help you accomplish a goal • Stressor-is the trigger of stress

Stress Response • Stress response-body’s way of preparing you to deal with a demanding situation. • Physical responses to a stressor • Adrenaline is produced. • Hormone that increases the level of sugar in your blood giving you extra energy. • More blood directed to muscles and brain. • Heart rate increases.

  3. Stress Response • Muscles tighten up and are ready for action. • Senses sharpen, becoming more alert. • Air passages widen so you can take in more air. • These are the reasons average people can do superhuman things in stressful situations.

  4. Stress and Fatigue • Fatigue-extreme tiredness. • Physical fatigue-extreme tiredness of the whole body. • Running a marathon • Working a demanding job • Psychological fatigue-mental tiredness. • Multiple test on one day. • College students after finals.

  5. Avoiding Stress • Some you can’t avoid. • School • divorce • Some you don’t want to avoid. • Sports • performances • Some you should avoid. • Drugs and alcohol

  6. Stress Management • Coping Skills-way of dealing with and overcoming problems. • Stay healthy-diet, exercise and sleep. • Relax-reduce breathing rate. • Maintain a positive outlook. • Manage your time. • It is ok to tell people no. • Talk to someone about your problems.
