Entry Requirements • Two sections • Junior section: Secondary 3 to 5 • Senior section: Secondary 6 to 7 • Number of team members:1 to 6 • One student – One entry only • No restriction on the number of entries from each school • Entry form and details: http://www.hkss.org.hk • Submission deadline: 20 Feb 2009

  3. Project Contents • Theme of study: areas relating to Hong Kong’s social and economic characteristics • Housing • Education • Social welfare • Environmental protection • External trade • Structural changes of the economy

Project Contents (cont.) • Data source: • Major data sources are RESTRICTED to official data/statistics found in publications of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region • Further information: Census and Statistics Department(http://www.censtatd.gov.hk) • May make use of data sets found in other publications as supplementary data sources • Data obtained from self-conducted surveys NOT ALLOWED • Improper design or inadequacy in implementation → unreliable or biased results → misleading conclusions

Project Contents (cont.) • Analysis and interpretation of data: • Thoroughly study and analyze the data • Conduct simple data analysis and statistical reasoning (not necessary to use sophisticated statistical methods) • Presentation of results: • Fully present the facts and information behind the figures • Properly present the summary statistics or graphical displays • Discussions, arguments and findings based on the analysis of data

Preparation of Report • Report writing: • Title of the report reflects the theme of study • Introduce the topic of the study properly • State results of the analysis clearly • Summarize conclusions drawn • Handwritten or Typewritten • Chinese or English • No more than 20A4 pages (including all appendices) • Mentioning of data sources and relevant references

Originality of the Study • The study and compilation of the project report should be carried out by the participants • Teacher’s role • give guidance and advice on: • Identification of study theme • Data analysis • should NOTparticipate in • The actual study • The preparation of project report • Plagiarism→ Disqualification

Adjudication • Adjudication Panel: • Academics from post-secondary institutions • Statisticians from the Census and Statistics Department • Adjudication Criteria: • Appropriate use of descriptive statistics and statistical analysis/reasoning • Sound interpretation of data and analyses • Clear and neat presentation of findings • Good grasp of the theme of study • Use of relevant and adequate data sets • Fluency of language

Adjudication (cont.) • Adjudication Process: • Stage 1 • Adjudicators examine each project according to the adjudication criteria • A number of projects will be shortlisted • Stage 2 • Participants of the shortlisted projects will be invited to attend an interview to present their findings • Final assessment by the adjudicators to determine winning entries

  11. Members of all winning teams will also be arranged to visit the Census and Statistics Department to better understand the work of official statistical agency of Hong Kong.

  12. Prizes • First Prize: • Book Coupon HK$ 1500 and Certificates of Merit • Second Prize: • Book Coupon HK$ 1000 and Certificates of Merit • Third Prize: • Book Coupon HK$ 500 and Certificates of Merit • Distinguished Prizes: • Book Coupon HK$ 300 and Certificates of Merit

Prizes • Sun Hung Kai Properties Prize for the Best Thematic Project: • “Changes in Medical and Health situation in Hong Kong” • Book Coupon HK$ 1,000 and Certificates of Merit • Certificate of Appreciation will be awarded to each participant Participants working on this theme should illustrate with various relevant social statistics.
