  9. Balanced Literacy Approach… • During the 90-minute literacy block, students learn literacy through a workshop model called Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. Reader’s Workshop consists of five major components; read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and word work. Writer’s Workshop consists of independent writing, guided writing, shared writing, and conferring. • During both workshops, teachers collect data on students individually and in guided reading groups. The collected data is analyzed to design specific teaching points that connect to the Common Core Standards, as well as to individual student literacy strengths and needs. Lastly, during both workshops students learn specific content in science and social studies as they explore text through reading and writing.

  10. What do we do all day? Literacy : 90 minutes Independent Reading … Guided Reading… Literacy Centers… Mini-Lessons…Word Study…Shared Reading Writer’s Workshop:  30 minutes Narrative; Persuasive; Opinion; Non-Fiction;  work on grammar and spelling within writing context. Math:   70+ minutes Eureka Math   Independent Practice…Problem Solving..  Science/SS: 35 minutes Alternates as schedule allows and as curriculum best lends itself…much of it is done within the literacy block

  11. What will we learn this year? • In addition to becoming more independent readers and writers, we will be learning so much more this year. • Science: Soil, Earthworms, Ants, Butterflies, and other insects…. • SS:  Communities (Rural, Urban, Suburban) Map Skills, Comparing communities and determining how where you live affects how you live. 12. Second Grade I Can Statements for NYSS https://www.thecurriculumcorner.com/thecurriculumcorner123/wp-content/pdf/ican/icanmonitorcheckboxessecondcute.pdf http://www.engageny.org/parent-and-family-resources Valuable website to become familiar with what your child is being asked to do, now and in the future. Only way to help is to go on and see what it is all about.

  13. Also to be considered, is the amount of assistance it takes for a student to complete the assigned work and daily tasks. In order to get a 4…the student is completing work at a high level, consistently and without much assistance.Quizzes and Tests will usually have a grade written as a fraction (ex. 19/20) which is then converted into a 4,3,2 or 1. If a rubric is used, it is attached so things are as clear as possible. Daily Classwork, Effort, and Participation are all included in a student’s report card grade. Grading System

  14. Standards Based Report Card

  15. Field Trips (Ideas in the works) • Open to ideas... • Baldwin Public Library in Spring • Hofstra (Adams Playhouse) or LICM • Any ideas? Please approach me!!!
