What is the IB mission? • The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people through interculturalunderstanding and respect. • The organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to developchallengingprogrammes of internationaleducation and rigorousassessment. • These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelonglearners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. What is an IB education?

  3. Contents: • Students study concurrently: • Three subjects at higher level • Three subjects at standard level • All three parts of the core(TOK, CAS, EE)

  4. Subjects offered at LBP (Grades 11-12): Standard Level • History • Biology • Physics • French B • Visual Art Higher Level • English A1 HL • Math: Analysis and Approaches HL • Chemistry HL • Visual Art HL Physics/Biology & French B are tested in Grade 11

  5. IB Assessment: • Each IB course has a unique set of internal assessments, which are evaluated by classroom teachers and moderatedinternationally. • The IB exams are scheduled for the first three weeks of May 2020 (see schedule for details). • IB Marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). • The IB Diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points. The maximum value for an IB Diploma is 45 points.

  6. The Extended Essay (EE) • The EE is an in-depth study of a topic chosen by the student. Topics chosen should be limited in scope. • The EE is started at the end of Grade 11, completed in Grade 12 • The EE aims for students to: • pursue independent research on a focused topic • develop research and communication skills • develop the skills of creativity and critical thinking • engagein a systematic process of research appropriate to the subject • experiencethe excitement of intellectualdiscovery

  7. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) • TOK helps students critically think and inquire about “How do we know what we know?” • TOK topics and discussions occur in each subject area, and in the TOK class (Grade 11 and 12), and therefore provide a link and coherence to all of the subjects students are studying. • The aims of the TOK course are for students to: • make connections between knowledge and the wider world • develop an awareness of how individuals and communities construct knowledge • develop an interest in the diversity and richness of cultural perspectives • critically reflect on their own beliefs and assumptions • understand that knowledge brings responsibility which leads to commitment and action

  8. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) • CAS provides an opportunity to expand upon the things students are learning about themselves and the world by developing new experiences & then reflecting on these experiences. This helps students to assess & understand their strengths & limitations in order to support both their learning & personal development. • CAS Activity Log: • Record of the activities a student has participated in and time spent. • CAS Portfolio: • Students will periodically reflect on their experiences. Each student will create an individual physical representation of what they have learned about themselves and the world through their CAS activities. This can include mementos, pictures, trophies, samples of work, or other articles of importance.

  9. LBP & IB Fees (2019-20) Subject Fees: $200/course (Grade 11 and 12) in the year that a student writes the IB exam. Grade 11 students usually pay $200-400 Grade 12 students usually pay $400-800 The IBO no longer charges a student registration fee.

Important Dates (Approximate) Grade 11: • Oct 10: U of C visit • Nov 12-15: CAS Check-in • Dec 6: English WIT Due (initial draft) • Dec 16: Math Project Due (planning and initial draft) • Jan 20-30: Physics SL/Bio SL Tutorials • Feb 5-12: French B Written Exam (in-class) • Mar 4: Group IV Project (all day) • Mar 12-18: French Oral Assessment • May—Exams (see schedule) • Jun 5: CAS Portfolio Due • June – Diploma Exams Grade 12: • Oct 10: U of C visit • Oct 31: 1st TOK Paper • Nov 29: Math Project Due (rough draft) • Jan 23: Math 30-1 Diploma Exam • Jan 20-30: ELA, Math & Chemistry Tutorials • Feb 12: EE Due • Feb 21: English WIT Due • Feb 28: TOK Papers Due • Mar 6: Chemistry IA Due • Mar 9-13: English Oral Commentaries • May—Exams (see schedule) • May 26-29: CAS Portfolio Due, Presentation • June – Diploma Exams
