Product Title:‘Can I live in Your Home?’A story about animal habitats • Age range of intended audiences: 4 yrs. to 7 yrs. old • Product goals and objectives: • - To teach vocabulary related to animals and their habitats. • To teach the question form ‘Can I …?’ • Abstract: • The following story was designed for a kindergarten class (5-6 yrs.) of deaf students. It is a story about a little ant who is lost and cannot find her home. So she meets various animals and asks them if she can live in their house. The animals tell her that she cannot live in their house, because it is not a house where ants live. Finally the ant meets other ants and they let her stay in their house. • The students relied a lot on visual aids and pictures for comprehension. This story, since it was in the form of a power-point presentation appealed to the students. The visual component of the story also made it very easy to comprehend the story. • As a follow up to the story, various picture matching and work matching games were played. The students acted out the whole story. They also made a book of animals habitats, using the pictures provided at the end of the story and wrote sentences about each animal.

  3. One day, a little ant was walking in the jungle. She could not find her home. She was lost. So she started searching for her house.

  4. She walked and walked. Then she saw a bear. The ant asked, “Can I live in your house? I am lost.” The bear answered, “Oh no little ant, you cannot live here. This is a cave. Bears live in caves.”

  5. Then she walked some more. She saw a bee. The ant asked, “Can I live in your house? I am lost.” The bee said, “Oh no little ant, you cannot live here. This is a hive. Bees live in hives.”

  6. The ant kept on walking. Then she saw a rabbit. The ant asked, “can I live in your house? I am lost.” The rabbit answered, “Oh no little ant, you cannot live here. This is a burrow. Rabbits live in burrows.”

  7. So, she walked and walked again. Then she saw a snail. The ant asked, “Can I live in your house? I am lost.” The snail said, “Oh no little ant, I live in the shell on my back. You cannot live there. Snails live in shells.”

  8. Then she walked some more. She saw a spider. The ant asked, “can I live in your house? I am lost.” The spider said, “oh no little ant, you cannot live here. This is a web. Spiders live on webs.”

  9. The ant was still walking. She was very tired now. Then she saw a fish in the water. The ant asked, “can I live in your house? I am lost.” The fish answered, “Oh no little ant, you cannot live with me. Fish live in water.”

  10. The ant kept on walking. She saw some birds. The ant asked, “can I live in your house? I am lost.” The bird answered, “Oh no little ant, you cannot live with me. This is a nest. Birds live in nests.”

  11. Now the ant was really tired and sad! She was lost! She couldn’t find her home! Then she saw some ants. She asked, “can I live in your house? I am lost.” The Ants said, ”Of course you can! This is a holein the ground. Ants live in holes.” The little ant was very happy. She found her house!
