  1. Therapeutic vs reproductive cloning BMT

  2. What is the difference between therapeutic and reproductive cloning? • Please Describe in your own words on paper, and please share your answer with the class

  3. Therapeutic • We are treating something. Some form of therapy for an injury perhaps.

  4. Reproductive Cloning • To make an exact copy of • Done simply to replicate someone or something

  5. Who was the first cloned mammal? • When was the first mammal Cloned?

  6. Your turn • In your own words tell me the difference between therapeutic cloning, and reproductive cloning. • Who and when was the first mammal cloned?

  7. Should we clone humans? • WHY? • WHY NOT? • WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL OPINION?

  8. How do scientist feel about cloning humans? • Some are a proponent of cloning humans • Some are an opponent of cloning humans • How do our class opinions on the topic relate to those of the scientists? • Opponent = Proponent=

  9. What is a clone • Clone: precise genetic copy • Reproductive cloning: really called SCNT which stands for somatic cell nuclear transfer. • Reproductive cloning: uses a surrogate mother • Therapeutic cloning: does not use a surrogate mother

  10. Reproductive Cloning • If we use a surrogate mother with reproductive cloning, what must happen in order to grow the clone?

  11. Therapeutic cloning • If a surrogate mother is not used, how do we obtain our clone?

  12. Therapeutic Cloning

  13. Your turn • What does SCNT stand for? • Which type of cloning uses a surrogate mother? • Which type of cloning does not use a surrogate mother?

  14. Obstacles to reproductive cloning using animals? • What do you think?

  15. Obstacles to reproductive cloning using animals • Success rate is very low • Vast majority of problems occur during fetal development • Additional problems show up after birth and years later • Large offspring syndrome (clones are 20-30% larger than usual which as you can imagine makes it more difficult to deliver.

  16. Tell me what you know • In your own words tell me about reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning. • Do you agree with cloning in general? • Might you prefer one type of cloning over the other? • Do you think we will ever be cloning humans in the future?
