  3. STOP!Notice and Note • When you are reading and a character (who is probably older and a lot wiser) takes the main character aside and gives serious advice. • These are important hints of theme!

  4. EXAMPLE: (Charlie Swan – Bella’s father) “You didn’t do anything. That’s the problem. You never do anything.”

  5. ST OP!Notice and Note • THEN WHAT? • After you note Words of the Wiser, ask yourself the following question: What’s the lesson, and how might it affect the character?

  6. STOP!Notice and Note The answers to that question will help to indicate an important theme in the story.

  7. COPY THE FOLLOWING REMINDERS: Always, STOP! Notice and Note: • Words of the Wiser– When you are reading and a character (who is probably older and a lot wiser) takes the main character aside and gives serious advice. • THEN, ask yourself the question: What’s the life lesson, and how might it affect the character? • FINALLY, answer that question in your book.
