MDOT Maintenance Condition Survey Information • Old Jorgenson System (stolen from Florida) • Survey MS, US & Interstate Highways • Do not survey county roads or city streets • MDOT Maintained Inventory – 14,000 Miles • Samples are one (1) mile in length • 240 samples surveyed each year – 1.7% of the system • 20 per district every 6 months • Weighted per district by highway type

  5. Roadside Standards • Shoulder (Un-Paved) • No shoulder drop-off greater than 2” • No deviations greater than 4” below or 2” above original design • Pass/Fail • Front Slope • No ruts or washouts greater than 6” in depth • Pass/Fail

  6. Roadside Standards (Cont.) • Back Slope • No ruts or washouts greater than 12” in depth • No erosion onto adjacent property • Pass/Fail • Turnout • No ruts, potholes or washouts greater than 4” in depth • Pass/Fail

  8. Drainage Standards • Storm Sewer • Cross- sectional area is not restricted more than 10% • Pass/Fail

  9. Side Drain • Cross- sectional area is not restricted more than 20% • Pass/Fail

  10. Cross Drain • Cross- sectional area is not restricted more than 15% • Pass/Fail

  11. Ditch Bottom Inlet • No obstruction of openings more than 15% • Pass/Fail

  12. Roadside Ditch • Standard ditch bottom not less than 2.5 feet below the edge of pavement. • Pass/Fail

  13. Curb Inlet • No obstruction of openings more than 10% • Pass/Fail

  14. Drainage Standards (Cont.) • Median Ditch • Standard ditch bottom not less than 2 feet below the edge of pavement. • Pass/Fail • Outfall Ditch • Outfall functioning as originally designed • Pass/Fail • Misc. Drainage Structure (paved ditch, flumes, French drain, edge drain) • Pass/Fail

Vegetation & Aesthetics (Cont.) • Landscaping • Vegetation is maintained in a healthy, attractive condition • Pass/Fail • Tree Trimming • Tree limbs no lower than 14.5’ over travelway, shoulder, clear zone • Tree limbs no lower than 10’ over sidewalk • No dead or dying trees over or adjacent to travelway that could prove to be hazardous • Pass/Fail

Vegetation & Aesthetics (Cont.) • Curb/Sidewalk Edge • Grass or debris encroaches on sidewalk no more than 4” • Adjacent Grass no more than 2” below nor 4” above top of curb or sidewalk • Pass/Fail • Litter Removal • No more than 100 visible pieces (Multi-Lane) • No more than 50 visible pieces (2-Lane) • Pass/Fail • Turf Condition • Sparse turf, contains high percentage of undesirable noxious or broadleaf weeds • Pass/Fail

  20. Summary • Current Maintenance Condition Standards in place since the late 1980’s • Survey Results not tied to budget • No penalty for standard failures • Annual Report with results developed by Maintenance Division • Looking to Update Survey and MMS in the near future.
