  5. Grip Strength Study performed by: Ergonomics Laboratory – Technical University of Lisbon Results: Average grip force: Men: 38.9N Women: 27.7N Results: Average grip force: Men: 8.7lbf Women: 6.2lbf

  6. Torque Specs The torque values listed represent the installation specifications for the filter. Many of these sources stated that these values are quite high, and stated that hand- tightening is an acceptable alternative. Therefore we feel that 15ft-lb represents the max amount of torque needed to remove the filter in most cases.

  7. Oil Filter Thickness Uncommon size Design for this thickness

  8. FBD-Left Handle Rx2 Y2 Rx1 Y1 F

  9. F θ Rx Ry R θ FBD-Ratchet Link To increase Ry1, the angle Θ can be increased at the open position, or the pivot point for the ratchet link can be moved closer to the pivot point of the left handle. Both options increase the mechanical advantage.

  10. Punch Force 6.4 lbf 3.2 lbf 3.2 lbf This analysis shows that the punch must be very sharp in order to pierce the filter. The sharpness can be decreased if the generated force is increased.

  11. Pin Force • From FBD, Rx2=16.2 lbf • Even for a bolt as small as 1/8”, the shear stress is less than 3 ksi.

  12. Weight • Assume parts are made of steel (.2818 lbs/in^3) • Main handle: 3.96 in^3, 1.12 lbs • Ratchet handle: 2.89 in^3, 0.82 lbs • Slider: 0.63 in^3, 0.18 lbs • Total: 2.12 lbs • Weight will need to be a consideration
