  5. Mexico Spanish conquistadors brought religion and a European way of life Mexico won Independence in 1821, but lost northern territory to the United States in 1848 Mexico has had a president, but has ruled like a dictator, causing social inequality (very rich or very poor)

  6. Mexico Today • Mexico is not fully economically developed, but improving • Biggest problem is social inequality

  7. Challenges for the Future • Location leads to pollution • Inequality leads to poverty, which leads to crime • Mexico’s best want to leave • Lack of skilled workers in Mexico • Cycle of Poverty because of inequality

  15. Caribbean • Many of the Caribbean islands are a mixture of French/Dutch/British and African cultures. • Unique languages (creole) and religions (Santeria, Voodoo) • Population growth has caused unemployment and underemployment (vacation dollars)

  19. South America • Colonized by Spanish, British, Dutch, French, and Portuguese • Brazil – Portuguese • Terrain has led to a buffer state of Uruguay and isolation has caused each country to have its unique cultures, religions, and languages.

  20. South America • Largely agricultural • Because of the differences in seasons, South American summer crops sell well in North America winters • Mining is popular in countries along the Andes

  21. South America Biggest issue facing South America is poverty. Poverty has led to drug trafficking, violence, and terrorism throughout South America

  22. El Nino/La Nina • El Nino – unusually warm water in the southeastern Pacific Ocean causes weather changes • La Nina – unusually cool water in the southeast Pacific Ocean has the opposite effect.
