  2. DEFINING EQUALITY • Complex/elusive • Contested – same, proportion, equity • Proxy: - fair? - just? - egalitarian? • Universality of social inequality (human nature?) • It matters • What would socially equal world look like?

  3. Explaining Social Inequality

  4. Conceptualizing EqualityComparing equality paradigms Equal Model Equity Model Formal (abstract and mathematical equivalent) Substantive (context and consequence For true equality, everyone should be treated equally (the same) regardless of People should be treated as equals precisely because of their difference-based needs Pretend pluralism/differences = irrelevant Taking differences into account Same treatment as a matter of course Customized treatment when necessary Equal opportunity Equitable outcomes Integration/inclusion (fit into system) Inclusivity (system adjusts) Discipline of the market Government intervention/regulation

  5. Addressing Equality“How do we get there from here?” • Improve human capital or change the system? • Work within the system or outside of it? • Market or government? • Treat everyone the same (commonalities) or different when needed (take diffs seriously)? • One dimension or intersectionality • Opportunity or outcomes? • Short term/immediate causes vs long term/root

  6. Creating Social Equalitye.e. as philosophy • Institutional Inclusion/Inclusivity • Definition • Process + framework for modifying institutions • to reasonably accommodating the difference-based needs of minorities • to make institutions more reflective, respectful, responsive (ensure part + contrib) • To create a service that is available, accessible, appropriate

  7. Employment Equity as Policy • 1986/1996 Acts • WHO • WHY? • HOW? - ensure all qualified Canadians have same access - by ensuring proportional representation

  8. EE Obligations Each federal institution of 100+ etc = • Survey • Analyze • Review • Introduce positive programs - reasonable accommodation - Goals + timetables - voluntary compliance

  9. Debates • Is it a legitimate response to a genuine problem? (is it blame the victim/system model?) • Is it working? • Was ok once, but time to discard and move on? • Intent ok, consequences a problem (reverse vs reversing discrimination) • Is there a better EE?

  10. CASE STUDY • Psych Dept at WLU in 2000 • Job ad – only women need apply • 4 out of 22 faculty = women HYPOTHETICAL CASE STUDY • Waterloo Region School Board • Job Ad…only men need apply • Desperate shortage of male teachers

  12. Rehabilitating capitalism? • Good, bad, the ugly “worst …except for others” CHALLENGE = capitalism = keep best, ditch worst • Options: (a) social democratic capitalism? • Options: (b) responsible capitalism?

  13. Capitalism: What is it • Private ownership of means of production • Profit maximization/ maximizing stockholder values • Production for exchange on market based on supply /demand • Competitive markets/minimal govt intervention • Wage labour • WORST SPIN – process of exploiting workers for profit - inequality integral, not just byproduct BEST SPIN - creativity, productivity

  14. Towards a Responsible Capitalism • Balancing people + Env with profits (people+ Env +profit) • Production for social utility/wealth creation/jobs rather than private gain/financial speculation • Corporations as part of community, society (SOCIAL CONTRACT) • Environmentally sustainable practices • Government rules/regulation for common good • A Market economy NOT a market society

  15. Towards a More Equal Canada • Revolution = One mindset at a time - greed = social no-no - focus of accomplishment= collective - be change/your corner - Margaret Mead’s insight • Equality = journey, not destination but aspiration

  16. Final exam • Thursday, June 20, 7-9, Here • ‘Snow’ Date=? • Format = MC + Short Answers • Content = Ch 7-12
