  1. April 14, 2005 Status Report of ATSC TSG (T3) Ad Hoc Group on SRMs • Scope: • “To develop a set of requirements and a work statement for developing a recommended practice for the carriage of content protection System Renewability Messages (SRMs) in ATSC transport streams and in MPEG-2 single program transport streams”. • Deliverable: • ATSC SRM Carriage Specification (Workplan and Requirements) • Status/Plan: • Dec (‘04) – start of activity • April 1 - draft sent to ATSC SRM ad hoc group for review • April – comment period • May 9-10 – submit for approval to ATSC Technology and Standards Group (TSG)

  2. DRAFT Workplan Overview • Workplan: • May 2005 – Approval of work plan and requirements • May-July 2005 – Receive technical contributions • Aug-Sep 2005 – Generate first draft of specification • Oct – Nov – Validate, test, receive comments • Dec 2005 – Approve final specification

  3. DRAFT Requirements Overview • General Requirements: • The SRM Carriage Specification shall: • provide an effective solution to the broadcast stream and downstream problems described in section 5.1 (the general problem statement); • allow the standardized insertion and carriage of the various SRMs in MPEG-2 Transport Streams and in ATSC Transport Streams; • define how broadcasters insert SRMs into their ATSC broadcast streams; • define how an ATSC receiver can identify and parse these SRM files in the transport stream in order to pass them to the CPSs implemented in that ATSC receiver or • define a means for transmission of SRMs to downstream CPSs other than those specifically implemented in the ATSC receiver; • define how the SRMs for each CPS can be uniquely identified;

  4. DRAFT Requirements Overview • Support for several CPSs: • The SRM Carriage Specification shall support the carriage of SRMs for the following CPSs: • Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) • High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection System (HDCP) • The SRM Carriage Specification shall support at least twenty distinct CPSs. • The SRM Carriage Specification may assume that the additional CPS SRM architectures are similar to that of DTCP or HDCP.

  5. DRAFT Requirements Overview (Other requirements) The SRM Carriage Specification shall define a generic encapsulation format for the private SRM data of each CPS. The SRM Carriage Specification shall support both live streaming architectures and carousel feed storage architectures. The SRM Carriage Specification shall support the following with respect to each CPS: Support file sizes of __________ Support repetition rates of _________ Support throughput requirements of _________ Support storage requirements of ________ The SRM Carriage Specification shall support the following means of carriage: - ATSC digital terrestrial broadcasts - Digital cable re-carriage and transcoding - Digital satellite re-carriage and transcoding - Propagation to downstream devices
